Towing a quad through dunes

Just wondering what you guys use for towing & how you are towing if a quad breaks down in the dunes & there are no sxs or four wheelers available from camp & need to use another quad etc.last year my buddies battery died at night & I went to Pull him so he could bump start the engine(which he was able to do & get back without lights on since battery was toast) facing slightly downhill with a 20'x1" strap & it ended up destroying my rear grab bar & flag.i think what happened is after I got him started & I slowed down some of the slack came forward & got wrapped around my paddle/axle which pulled the grab bar down.i had attached my tow strap to the grab bar.anyways I don't want rookie mistake # 268 to happen again ! I was thinking of getting a smaller 12'x1" (shorter)strap & attaching it around my swingarm & to a low point on other quads frame so I'm not pulling the other quads front end down/dredging but I'm now concerned that strap will slide over on the (swing arm)& get wrapped up in sprocket or brake rotor if it's a long tow back to camp with a lot of turns/dune peaks etc.any ideas/experiences would be appreciated....

I always wrap around the grab bar and persons bumper using a strap. Nothing special really just a cheapo tow strap you can buy anywhere. BUT I take a cut off wheel and cut off the large metal hooks on them so I have just the strap. Could buy the mroe expensive ones without the hooks but its just a 400lb atv and a person.

Trick is when you do it the person must understand once they get started they need to keep up with the person pulling and shout at them to stop. That way you dont wrap up the strap on everything. When you take off it should be taunt as well.

That makes sense,I will start carrying some mini jumper cables as well & a gps so I can punch in location, now that they opened more of the glammis dunes I want to go on longer rides south towards Mexico, all I know is towing in soft sand is not easy, tires want to dig because of other rider/quad dead weight & you can't slow down to much on drop offs etc or you'll just be stuck again & maybe even worse.i guess you could always do some recon patrol, pick a good route, come back & hook up & follow your own tracks so you know what's coming.

I tried this 18" soft tie I use for my motorcycle bars & wrapped it around the swinger & it seems to stay dead center when under tension.i will be throwing it in the backpack with my new 12 foot strap.i think the 20 foot strap I have is just too long (except for flat trails)when going over steep hills it acts like slingshot on the quad being towed...

There is one big problem with towing from the swinger in the dunes...traction. If you put the tow strap on the swinger and go to take off it actually takes down force off of the swinger and then the rear tires don't grip. Also with it down on the swinger it will cut through hills as you go up and over dunes worse than with it on the grab bar.
