Hello, I was wondering if some of you who had the starter clutch go out could tell me what types of symptoms and noises you had. I'm almost 100% sure mine is shot. I read on another forum that when it goes, a possible symptom is that the engines turns over very slowly almost like the battery is very low. Is this true? And also that once you fix the starter clutch and parts that you probably have to readjust your decompressor.

What types of symptoms did you guys have? Thanks!!

thanks stewart, and yes i think thats a good idea. it would help lots of people that are confused about whether their starter clutch is going out or not. seems like here lately there's a new thread every week about it.

It's because of the cold weather. It's harder to start in the cold and it takes basic common sense. I watched a "retarded" friend who i dont like very much. He kept trying to turn over his bike and he flooded that thing. Starter went bad in the process and he wasted money on new 2 batteries and starting fluids. lol i just went home

So, I got my 450 all taken apart. was almost 100% positive it was starter clutch. I can't see anything wrong with the reduction gear or starter clutch assembly. the snap ring is still perfectly in tact on the reduction gear. And the starter gear turns counter clockwise and not the other way... No signs of wear either that i can see. Is there something I'm missing here? Anything else to check while I got it apart. I am about to put it back together and take it to stealership......... UGH

mine looked perfect too. you still need to replace the starter clutch anyway. its a good idea to replace the clutch outer also. check the one way gear and make sure it isnt scarred or scratched up. and if the reduction gear is still together and looks ok, then it should be fine

Linear play in reduction gear is normal, and as little play is in clutch basket I would think is also ok.... Did u torque nut on basket to specifications in manual?

the reduction gear is fine. dont torque the case cover bolts you will over tighten them. just hand tighten them good with a 1/4" ratchet
