I have a 05r. I'm looking into an additional quad. An 07er. I have to say I don't honestly know the difference in the r vs the er. Any help?

Not much, and so much, at the same time.

The final package is close to the same output after all is said and done...but the main thing is electric start.

The engines are different, but pretty close to the same. The steering knuckles and A-arm geometry have some slight differences. ER has a flat slide FCR carb which is a bit better. The swingarm is a bit longer on the ER. These are just the main things. Maybe someone else who loves to type will post up the rest of the little nit-picky differences with them.

Been on this forum with my 06 ER for 4 years now and have never heard of a battery breaking off. Huh.

The R is for men and ER is for pussy's hahaha jk! but R is kick, ER is electric. The R is better for racing, or hard riding. With ER you run the risk of your battery breaking off.[/b]

i believe that the 07 had a bigger air box, filter and inlet tube, a bigger nicer carb, a smaller cam and one tooth less on the front sprocket, a little better bottom end power and with the addition of a cam it makes good power.. all things I've heard, i own an 05 and love it but i'm sure that u can't go wrong getting an 07..

All said above is true. The carb and airbox are superior to the 05. I own both, an 07 and an 05. To me, even though my 07 has 05 arms and knuckles on the front, it still doesnt handle like my 05, and it doesnt feel the same even though they both have mostly the same stuff on them.

I really like the motor on my 07 though. For easy bolt ons making power, the 05 cant touch it. Throw in an 06-up HRC, 04-06 CRF (same as HRC) or an 02 CRF camshaft, jet it, split the head gasket, and you have a pretty hot little MX motor.

I thought he was asking the differences between the R and the ER....not the differences between the 04-05 and the 06+. The above isnt true when comparing the 06+ R and ER though. The difference is electric start and a few pounds...nothing more. The ER didnt exist until 06.

I guess i'm just a little confused now as to the actual question. The two generations are quite different, but not the R vs ER from 06

I'm probably thinking way to much into this

I prefer my kick start in a lot of ways. however it does take longer to start than electric. and on dead start races the electric starts are usually out front.[/b]
i dont agree with this at all. i can get out in front with my kicker just as easy if not easier than an e-start. mine starts so much faster than any estart i have been on. my .02

Agreed!

By the time the ER guys fiddle around with turning the key on I can be started and on my way. Since I don't have a battery to worry about killing I just leave the key on so it is always one kick away from ripping!

A few corrections....the carb is actually smaller (40mm for 06,41mm for 07 and up) but is an FCR flatslide and technically superior. The 04/05s actually are more bottom end oriented from the factory and kickstarting works flawlessly all the time and will start on first kick 99% of the time.

Differences between 04/05s........................06/up
Bore 94mm Bore 96mm
Stroke 64.8mm stroke 62.1
longer skirt 10.5:1 piston short skirt 12:1 piston
42mm roundslide Keihin 40/41mm FCR Keihin
Different stock cams
steel intake/exhaust valves titanium intake/steel exhaust
Smaller airbox 1.4x larger airbox
Smaller air filter larger air filter
Different intakes
9850 rpm limit non adjustable stock CDI 9850 stock with (10850 option) adjustable stock CDI
04/05s have better handling front geometry (spindles/knuckles)
06/up have +1 inch longer swingarm
Kickstart only kickstart or electric start
14/38 stock gearing 13/38 stock gearing
Trans gear ratio Primary red 2.739,1st2.071,2nd1.625,3rd1.333,4th1.120,5th0.963,Final red2.714 Primary red 2.739,1st2.230,2nd1.785,3rd1.437,4th1.181,5th0.962, final red 2.923
Neutral indicator on 06/up ER models
04/05s have more rounded headlight than 06/up
Hoods are different
Oil sight glass higher and towards front of cover lower and towards rear or cover
Oil capacity .78/.82L or .82/.87 US qt oil/oil and filter .65/.69 or .69/.73 US qt oil/oil and filter
Super restrictive exhaust canister (even with HRC) Free flowing canister (with HRC)
Fuel tank 3.17 US gallon 3.09 US gallon
350 dry weight 368 dry weight (electric start) I think

HRC kits

04/05 comes with 1st gen HRC cam,modified airbox lid,HRC end cap,HRC needle,185 main jet,larger snorkel,larger breather T,spark arrestor,gasket.
06/up comes with 2nd gen HRC cam,HRC header,HRC sub harness (green wire mod),HRC end cap, larger breather, tube plug,gaskets,162 main jet, Accelerator pump bypass jet #55,HRC needle, adj tool.

That is all I can think of right now....maybe someone wants to clean it up and sticky so we can refer to it and add/edit as needed.......there were also some changes made in 08....not to mention color options.
