These are like tire balls but alot easier to maintain and install. They are called Tire Johnys. They are a huge hit in europe and are now making their way to the US. Im one of the first to use them and i can say from personal experience they do work and are about half the price. John Elliott is a muti time MX champ in the UK and is the designer of these Unique Product. I have let all the air out of my rear tires and ran them flat the other day just to mess around and didnt even notice they were flat. I think they will be a huge benifit to all xc races from novice to pro. Check them out here: http://tmtoffroad.com/

pool noodles

these i feel are better than pool noodles. Ive tried them too but pool noodles arent as stiff as these are. these are pre cut to fit your specific size tire which ive never seen pool noodles large enough for the rear tires. So pool noodles would require you to cut alot of them the width of the tire. And it still doesnt fill up the tire fully.
The other down is I always heard foam would flat spot easy and make them seem out of balance. If your tire doesn't hold air, these are gonna not give you a full tire feeling. They would definately let you finish but probably not run to your full speed.
Didn't DirtWheels or some other mag test these recently?
Use the 6" toy balls from Walmart they work great. Kind of a pain to get in the tires.

yeah theyre are lots of cheap alternatives to these tireballs or tirejohnnys.....the pool noodles will flatspot if you blow the bead BUT youll still finish and for alot less of a replacement cost.
yes ive had pool noodles in my other set of tires. i recently took them off the rims and found the foam from the noodles was disinegrating insde the tire. Not terribly, but alot of foam dust came out. The foam on these is alot stiffer than the noodles, but i imagine it will still flat spot if you run with absolutely no air. No prob in the rear tires but wouldnt be ideal for the fronts. But it would save your rim and allow you to finish the race or get home from trail riding.
