Won’t start unless it is bump started

Hello so my 08trc will not start unless it is bump started. This only happened up until recently and once it’s running it runs fine. When you try to use the electric start it just cranks and cranks but nothing happens. This has happened before when I first got it in the beginning of 2021 and I took it to a shop where they adjusted the valves and it fired right up after that. Could the valves be the same issue again?

Yes, it’s been two years. Ideally you want to check valve clearance every 6 months, in my opinion at least. Unfortunately a lot of people (use to myself) do not service valves untill there’s a problem.
you can shim them yourself, no need to pay shop prices. I was intimidated to do them myself, but after watching YouTube videos a bunch of times, it’s pretty simple.

Yeah I’m not too intimidated by it, was just looking for others opinions on if it was a problem or not. So do I need to buy shims?
Yes you’ll need new to buy some shims, to figure out your new shim thickness take your valve clearance minus the clearance it’s supposed to be and add the old shim size. You can either buy just a few shims from your local dealer or buy a whole shim kit, it’s up to you.
You might wanna find out what sizes you need first if you go to the dealer and don’t buy the kit.
Or buy the hot cams kit. There will be a decent amount of shims you may not use, but it might be easier than taking off the lid finding out the shim size, then drive to the dealer, drive back etc.
Not sure how close you are to a Honda dealer & if they even have the shims you will need 🤷🏻‍♂️ up to you.

Me personally, im buying the kit now so when my valves tighten up I have them on deck. And I wasn’t insinuating that you were intimidated to do your valves, i apologies if I came off that way.
I use to not touch anything internally with my Motor cuz I was. But I got sick of paying the dealer $$ when it’s so easy to do lol. Can be done under an hour but they charge a few hours at least.
mite extortion and should be illegal 😂. Let us know how you make out.

No need to apologize, I was just “throwing it out there” that I’m not too afraid to try something I’ve never done. I also never new that shims were needed all the time, I just thought you went in there and tightened up the valves and your done. Learn something new everyday

I thought the same lol, no shims, just loosen the valves back up and good to go haha. That would be nice tho, engineer valves that never need to be shimmed just adjusted. Why can’t that be done? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Why can’t Honda make a 450 again? Why can’t Honda make 2 strokes again? Honestly Honda seems to become more of a boring powersports brand everyday.

Honestly after watching rockymoutains video on adjusting these valves, I may just have a local shop I know and trust do it. I don’t really have the time to mess with it, and I don’t want to mess it up.

450 atv’s and two strokes are a problem for all the Karen’s out there who doesn’t want a blade of grass to be killed or an ant in the sand to get hurt so no more big boy toys, it sucks. If you can afford the shop then by all means sir drop it off, pick it up and riiidde!!!! 👍

They are especially an issue with people in my town cause all of us have race bikes/quads and our town is a valley so you can here them from miles away
“They” say there isn’t a market for 450 atv’s anymore but thats horse 💩. The problem is

yea noise is a big issue everywhere I ride too. But a new corvette or mustang with magnaflow exhaust is ok 🤦🏼‍♂️ The hypocrisy is real. They will come out with an electric atv before another 450 cuz that’s what Washington is pushing. The glory days are over, unless we can get trump in there for two terms, who knows.
but I plan on getting a CRF 450 dirtbike soon, the works edition preferably. I saw one that was street legal on my job site today and I was impressed. Two small mirrors on the bars with indicators front and rear, and a very small break light in the rear fender. It was cool

Im still an atv trx450 guy thru and thru, the quad will always be my first choice, but I want the best of both worlds.
Is there any mods you can do while the shop is in there? Cam? SS springs? A flux capacitor lol? That is the key to time travel

Well they do have the style with the rocker arm where you loosen the locknut on top and adjust with a flat screwdriver. My old Trx250ex I had, had that style. Not sure why these don’t have that style.
