What is the best brand and caliber handgun?

looking to get a handgun, and don't know what to get.

Friend of mine just picked up the Taurus p-940 .40 S&W for $265.00. He likes it alot, but I have never owned a handgun, and don't know what is the best brand to get.

How are the Glock's? I heard that they are pretty reliable, and indestructible. But pricey.

Let me know what ya think.

sorry i dont like 40 cals i would go with a 9mm or a 45cal i like my 1911 colt its a 45 and it got some nock down power
springfield XD .40 or 9mil

.45's are badass no doubt, but imo it's a lil overkill for a handgun thats to be used for personal protection, but thats my lil a$$ a clip through a .45 would wear me out... not to mention price of ammo you can get 9mil bullets for practly nothing.
Walther p-99. .40s&w

Taurus has always been known as a second rate manufacturer. I personally havent owned one so I cant judge from personal exp. I have a Springfield Arms prepped .45, 2 Glock 19s and a S&W Sigma .40. I personally like shooting the .40 the most. The .45 weighs a ton more then the .40 and kicks like a mule in comparisson. The Glocks are nice because they are light but they seem very unbalanced to shoot. If I could only have one I would take my .40. It's light, bulky enough to fit in my hands well (I am pretty big guy) and balanced well enough that I can pie plate 12 rounds at 25 yards in just over 15 seconds.

All depends on what your going to be using it for. And also your hand size, sensitivity to recoil, and if anyone else in you family my have to depend on it. I personally like 45 cals but I do carry my 357mag on occasion. I would like to get a 460 snub nose. That would be a great gun for me. But it might not suit you. I need more info to help you out. Taurus does not make a bad gun. I have not heard anything bad about them. I would not own a glock in any caliber above a 9mm. There are too many 45 glocks that I have seen go boom the wrong way. That is why glock introduced the 45GAP caliber. One thing I heavily suggest is that you test fire a pistol (or same make and modle) to see if it fits your hand. I have bought most of my pistols from people that bought hand guns to big for their hands.

Hope this helps.

Here is what i use for a lil personal protection...S&W 500mag with some hornady 500 grain slugs....lol

This will all come to personal preference...I myself Love my Beretta 92fs 9mm and would not own a glock but hey that is just me...If you are set on a 45acp I would recomend a 1911 or a H&K USP both are very nice!...Find a gun that is comfortable to you and I would recomend a 9mm due to the abundance of options for bullets and a good price.....just my 2cents

i personally like the glock 19 if youw ant a good realiable gun, and i know you like reliability because you have a honda, then glock is where its at

no matter what you do to it throw it in mud, hold it under water it will still fire every time
very very easy to take apart to clean there is nothing i dont like about the glock, but would like it if it was a little flashier

but if your looking for the gun of handguns, look no farther than the S&W 500

goodluck
I am making a list of who's house not to break in to right now......J/K
ya gotta get the 500 S&W that was on Manswer's it can stop a fricking elephant, thats what im talking about!
it is all in what you want to do with it. smaller guns have more capacity, less knockdown power, cheaper to shoot. bigger calibers are pretty much the opposite. i can personally say that i do like like taurus's and own 3 of them. and i really like my CZ 97 45ACP also. it all depends on what you want and even when you decide you could have a few hundred choices
My 500 is a monster for sure......Just buy plenty of ear plugs....and take out a loan for the ammo cause the last box of shells i bought was hornady 500 grain and it was 70$ for a box of 20, but i also have gotten them as cheap as 20$ for 20 rounds at cabelas

For a first time purchase, I would get a revolver.
An auto is nice, but it's sure easy to put a round in your foot.
A 38 revolver is a good start. And a Taurus is a good cost/value alternative.
My $0.02

thats what im talkin about, haha... dont have one of my own yet... due to age. that'll be my first purchase after the 21st bday!
.50 caliber desert eagle[/b]

ever shoot one? all i can say is you better old on!

im still looking for a .357 mag, autoloader... sig makes a .357, but it takes a .357 sig round, so its not really a mag, and the only other on is the desert eagle. if i were to buy a DE though, id either get the .45 or the .50 cal like suggested above

but daily i carry a glock model 22, .40 cal. and sometimes the AR-15 ends up in the back of my truck too...

i  2nd amendment!

the glocks are the most reliable and indestuctable. i want to get either a 357 or a 45 to take with me on backwoods rides. you never know when you might run up on a snake or a wild hog.
if you haven't shot an automatic pistol you should maybe take a handgun safety course. safety first, right!! automatic pistols are very dangerous. once they are ready to fire they become very dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. the glock is perhaps the most dangerous as there is no true safety on most models. my favorite handgun is my stainless steel ruger .40 (p series). it really doesn't have a true safety either but it does have a de-cock feature that is nice. it is a fairly affordable pistol too. as mentioned, revolvers are better to learn with as they are a little safer. good luck with whatever you decide to get and be safe.

That's kinda my dream gun there, I just love the look of them. I know it isn't one to pack, but would sure love to just have one to play around with. They are big, but I have watched people shoot them one handed, so not uncontrollable.

I just have a Hi Point Arms 9mm. I know it is a cheap gun, but that was the point something I could take trail riding or wherever I went and not be to worried about it. I shoots fairly good, and has never had any trouble jamming on me. It is a good gun for under a 100.

I definately like the Rugers for the money and the S&W, not a big fan of Glock, I just think they are overpriced. Haven't been real impressed with Taurus, think you can find better for the money. Probably going to have a lot of disagreement, but it's JMO.
