So I basically after 17 years of abuse and being well maintained the transmission in my 2006 Honda trx450er finally is done. I do believe this was a good test of what these er’s transmissions can actually handle. This transmission was run on a basically stock setup only mods were the stage 1 hotcam and dg slip on. Otherwise it has a stock crank and piston. I have always run the Rotella 15-w40 oil and I guess the main question is where do I want to go from here. First step will be a new transmission and from there I will probably put a cp 12.5 piston in it to really wake it up.

I’m not a 100% what failed but I know the shifting has felt notche and it in general hasn’t felt right in a while. Today was the was the final ride I was going down the dirt roads and it all the sudden started grinding and making screeching noises. Took the front sprocket off to check it and yup that was it, it was doing the same thing turning it by hand. Also when I drained the oil there was lots of metal flakes in it. I am planing on tearing it apart completely in the next week or 2 when I have some time. I’ll keep y’all posted on what I find. One last question what’s y’all’s thoughts on a je 12.8 piston on 93 pump gas
That sucks! Well I’d say 17 years is a good run for sure. Now my 06 is still on its original stock gears with the newly rebuilt motor. So now you have me worried lol.
it seams fine tho, shifts smooth and crisp. But best believe if and when it does go, ill be rebuilding it with the sparks setup that phillybuilt has mentioned a couple times on here. (I believe it was sparks).
Ill also be maintaining & inspecting everything that still original on this thing (there’s not much tho) tranny, clutch & starter clutch, thats it.
you were just posting how its been in the family since the beginning too. Get her fixed up and ready to ride. When you tear into her please post pics and explain what exactly happened so i know what to look for. If you don’t mind.
you said you used rotella 15w40 in tranny side? If so how come you didn’t use 80W/85W tranny fluid & rotella on engine side?Just curious

I don’t really have a reason for using the Rotella on both sides, it’s just kinda what has worked well since the beginning. I’m exited to get it back together, I’ll probably be getting a used transmission of of eBay cause a full sparks set up is crazy expensive, and probably gonna get a 12.5 or 12.8 compression piston along with a hrc header to match the dg slip on and then she’ll be ripping again.

👍. What does a full sparks set up go for anyways?

If you can, post a how to thread or sticky on the tranny replacement. I dont think there is one on here. Would like to add that to things ive learned how to do on here.🤙

A full sparks exhaust goes for about $600

Replacing the transmission isn’t to bad, I ended up helping a buddy do his about a year ago and it took us all of a probably 5 hours to put it back together carefully.

5 hours! No wonder the stealership charges an arm, leg, ears, nose, 3 fingers & your soul to do it.
😂. 5 hours is a big job (to me anyways). If you can post a how to on here, id be in your debt.
If you can. I know people are busy.

Yeah I don’t think I’ll be doing a how too but I will try to remember to get a few pictures as I go

Bummer! Ok a few pics it is 🤷🏻‍♂️
So last night I finished putting the motor together with the new transmission and the cp12.5 piston I plan on putting the motor in the frame today and then she’s ready to rip.

Update on putting the motor into her today. It went well and she started first try with no issues which almost never happens when I build things. She can move real good now with that 12.5 piston she is alive more than she has ever felt before.

Awesome man! Great to hear! I bet it feels good to have it moving under its own power again.

Yeah I missed her so much and she was only out for 2ish months she’s definitely moves good under her own power now.
You do any other performance mods while it was apart? That new piston is only .5 higher compression, but it can definitely make it feel snappier.

No other mods to it just did a new transmission and the 12.5 piston. It was getting very tired so that’s probably why it feels so much better
