I just biult a 2004 501 and was wanting to know what front sprocket the guys with the 480 and 501s are running on the sand. We went to the coast and I started out with the 14 tooth and could not launch in 2nd gear. I thought I was going to be able to but I couldnt. Im also running 22x11x8 10 blade ultra light haulers. Im going to try the 13 tooth this weekend.

on my 480 i had, at the end i was running 13/39 and liked it alot

i know the 05 and 04 450Rs mostly use a 12 tooth in sand, even with heavy motor mods(i think it is geared high already). i couldn't tell you if the 06 and up are the same. i use a 12 in sand and a 14 any other time. but my fourwheeler is not just for sand i ride everywhere. i have allways used a stock size rear sprocket.

I switch between a 13 and 14 on my bikes. That seems like alot of paddles for a 450 i run gilders on my bike. But thats just me

topend was good, but couldnt get out of the hole, i was just spinning.

Most people with 06's run 13-39/40 or people with the 04-05 run 12-39 / 13-39.

Changing 1 tooth up front is equivalant to changing 2.5 in the rear.

correct, i like the 13/39 alot.. plays well in the sand.

14/41 is close to the same thing as 13-38(stock for 06-07). Seems easier to change the front than to try and sqeeze on that 41 in th rear. 14/414 is about as big as you can go on a stock chain, and you will have a tough time getting that on.

15/35 is ridicously high geared.

i ran that last night at the track....works great for me..................banging on the rev limiter with ease

the gearing some of you are running would not get me pass 400ft without hitting the limiter

i haven't used a 13t sense i pulled the stock piston

bigger motors allow for different things. it was just a suggestion but i know someone that runs 15/35 with success thats why i mentioned it. on my motor im running 15/41 in pismo taking off in first finishing in third on the rev limiter. every bike and motor is different so unless you play with it and try it out you won't know what works best for your setup.

A 15/41 setup is almost identical to the stock 14/38 gearing....

15/41----1st 37.8mph
2nd 48.2mph
3rd 58.7mph
4th 69.9mph
5th 81.3mph

14/38----1st 38.1mph
2nd 48.5mph
3rd 59.1mph
4th 70.4mph
5th 81.9mph

These are calculated with 20 inch tires...but the differences will remain almost constant with other tire sizes.

As long as you get your "out of the hole" gearing figured out...in other words...whatever gearing gives you the best launch,the rest is cake :yes ....because... with the exception of first gear..these things have well spaced close ratio transmissions that will keep you in the meat through the rest of the gears.
