Spitting oil out of cylinder?

1494 Views 22 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  imsroll450r
i did some searches on this after the first occurance. it seemed like it was because of overfilling? then it seemed like most people actually meant the lines were leaking oil behind the head at the fitting.

so ill ask directly.. im leaking oil, a good amount, out of the hole on the cylinder right behind the header. is this normal under certain circumstances? i just changed my oil, and the level before riding was about halfway up the sight glass. i added a tiny bit of oil and it was right at the F line.

usually i put .75 quarts in, and its at the top of the glass or just over it. so it might be a tad overfilled, but this ride it wasnt as full. it leaked alot of oil after i stopped riding in the bed of the truck. somehow it got under where the engine was, infront of it, and on the front of the bed  im assuming the wind blew it, but i dont know how it did infront of the bike..

what do you think? maybe ill have to tear into the engine and do that darn 100mm cylinder mod now.

your spark plug tube seal was installed incorrectly or is damaged
and how do you fix it then cuz my bike is doing the same exact thing
you have to remove the valve cover and replace the seal. its a part your dealer should stock. straight forward fix.
spark plug seal huh? never heard of it causing issues.
My 06 did this, it would run out out the spark plug weep hole. Take the valve cover off and put a new seal at the base of the plug tube, its a really easy fix.

take your plug out and see if there is oil on the outside of it .

You sure do seem to have allot of bad luck.. We should change your screen name to Bad Luck! LOL!
my valve cover is spotless.

its all running out of the weep hole on the cylinder itself, and down the front of the crankcase.

id know for sure if it was leakin from the valve cover, cause sand sticks to any and everything. no sand was/is on my valvecover..

could this be a crankcase pressure issue? breather not working properly?

I'm not talking about the seal at the top of the tube, I replaced the one at the base, right where the weep hole is at with the spark plug. I'm almost 100% positive thats your problem. You have to take the valve cover off and then take the tube off also to replace the seal.
ok ill take a look. im goin to pull off the valve cover later tonight.

i did pull my plug wire, and there is oil on it. nothing came out of the cylinder and down the crankcase though. does that confirm your thought?
Yep thats your problem. Only other thing it could be is a cracked head but thats HIGHLY unlikely. Let us know whats up.
alright, thanks for the help. it just started doing it every ride, so it makes sense.

do you happen to have a part # for it? im looking at extruded views on motosport, i see a seal on the valve cover page, but it appears to be the one that sits on the cover.

on the cylinder head page, im not seeing the seal. maybe im just blind.

since im having to do all this work, it pushed me to get my carb bored and an intake while im at it.. thanks for costing me more $$ :_specialED:
Ok I'm on crack that was on my old 03 YZF that I had that problem, too many things I've worked on. Not sure on this one man, hopefully someone knows. Sorry for the confusion.
i guess i dont know what seal at the base of the tube you are talking about. it is pressed into the head. are you talking about the crush gasket on the spark plug?

the spark plug tube seal goes between the tube and the valve cover. if this goes bad then it lets oil run down the tube and out the weep hole.
Yeah I feel like an idiot now, there is no seal I was remembering working on the YZ. I got confused sorry about that. I actually second guessed myself and my bike is apart in the garage so I went out and looked. Shortly thereafter I felt very stupid...........

Anyone else got any suggestions?
so ill be getting this same problem of oil coming out the weep hole if the seal on the valve cover is bad? did i get that part correctly?

ive got oil on the plug boot, and oil coming out the weep hole.
im goin out to take apart the bike. ill post pics of my findings if it gives anymore clues.
i don't understand the mistake imsroll made. but if i understand you correctly 07lightning couldn't that seal that goes in the valve cover that seals against the spark plug tube be your problem? the manual wants you to replace it everytime you cover is off which is too much, but i could see the seal gettin nicked a little and letting oil drain down the spark plug tube and out onto the side of the cylinder?.?

hope this helps, sorry if i am way off based
That could be possible I would think. I have crammed water past the top of the spark plug boot when washing it and it came out the weep hole.
i found the problem guys, lol.. i laughed when i saw it.

the gasket that goes around the spark plug tube, is completely missing..

i dont know how it happened, but its just gone. there was a small crack and it was getting down the spark plug tube. so im gonna order a new one tonight, and my carb is goin out for boring since i was in that general area.

i wonder how long its been missing
