Skid Plate..Aluminum or plastic

Dear fellow 450r's:

I mostly have been ridding private tracks or Atco MX track in NJ. With most of my ridding time looking for speed and jumping. Not to much into the mud situation.
But lately I have been going into more sand quary areas that has some nasty rocks thay get kicked up.

I looked at the Pro-Armor full skid for protecting my quad. My friend suggested for me to stay away from aluminum and go towards Tag or Maires plastic ones?

Anybody have any opinions on this?

Thank you for your time..

I have a Pro Armor chassis skid if you are interested. I bought two of them used a while back, 1 for me, 1 for a friend. He sold his quad so I took the skid back. I love the aluminum, holds up well.

PM me if you are interested.

I run a Pro Armor Full skid and i love it works great and has all of the necessary holes in it for maintenance. I have never looked into the plastic skids so i have no comment there.
The only problem that I had was that it would rattle when mounted so I ran some weather stripping down the skid where it meets the frame. Problem solved.

You know now that you mention it mine did the same thing and i used some 3m backed foam from my work and also took care of it.
I just installed one of these. Its called a railer. Made by Tag metals. Its polyurethane. I love it and its super easy to install and light weight. [attachment=32890:railer.jpg]

^ that looks nice

I bought a plastic one for cheap about two years ago and it did not last

It mounted on the bottom under the engine to the stock threaded holes that the stock belly pan mounted to.

The bolt holes were recessed and used a rounded bolt, it all looked really clean.

It broke after two rides on those two thinner recessed circular holes and they punched right out Leaving a huge circular perfect hole the size of the recession. I forget what brand it was but I would go with aluminum , period. JMO
I appreciate all the good advice.

We have to ride along rail road tracks to get to the large pit
we go to and it is lined with these baseball sized rocks, that come flying up when we gas it.

That Railer is the exact one I was looking at for the plastic type. Where did you order yours from?
i run the stock plastic swingarm skid cuz i do a lot of hill climbing and the aluminum skids wont flex when it catches something where the plasic will flex more. after getting stuck on a steep hill cuz your aluminum skid caught a rock you change your mind pretty quick. id rather keep replacing $25 plastic skid plates than possibly have a roll over
i have a brand new tag railer skid sitting right here. its still in the packaging. bought it as a spare just in case my pro armor didnt hold up. but so far the aluminum has been great, also i think that they only make them for the 06's and up. but from what i hear the only thing you have to do is drill the oil drain plug hole larger for it to fit on 04-05. where in jersey are you located?
