Popping a bead.

2522 Views 31 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  fast 450r
Well, just got some tires/rims from someone and noticed that there mounted backwards, there pro wedges so they grip up alot better the other way around and was wondering if anyone knew any easy ways to pop the bead and get em off, My friend makes it sound like a PITA. I "THINK" i may be able to still mount them with the valve stem facing inwards which isnt abig deal cuz the PSI is right, right now. but if anyone has a good way to remount them fast/easy im listening.

EDIT: There not mounted backwards but mounted in less gripping direction.

Not real easy, but it's fairly easy to do with a bottle jack sitting on top of the tire next to the rim, then jack the jack up against something which pushes down on the tire. I have also used my toy hauler and a 1x2 piece of wood lowered down on the tire next to the rim. You have to go around the tire in a few different places, but it comes off fairly easily. The PITA part, for me, is getting the tire off the rim then back on and seating the bead. If I don't have the time, I just take it to a tire place that charges me $7.50 per atv tire change.

Yah it seems like running them backwards flip flopping the rims works fine and guess i'll keep it like that.
ive seen this done at the dunes but never needed to try it.

remove wheel and tire off the bike. place it flat on the ground.
place a 2x4 on the tire and with your truck easy your tire over the 2x4 till the bead pops.

sounds dangerous

do you let the air out of the tire?
I woud think that you would have to remove the core. I tried to use a HI Lift jack and put it under my truck. worked on one tire. I could not get the other to come off. Had to take it to my fathers shop. He has an old school manual tire machine worked awesome.

A lot of those pocket screwdrivers they give away for free have the tool on the back side.

Also you can buy a beadbreaker off of ebay for like $30. Makes it a ton easier.
