OVERHEATING

I have an 05 450r and after riding a while i noticed some coolnt coming out of the radiator. i thought it was just a little warm and so i filled her back up, but it did it again.

I have checked my water pump, it spins with the engine, the fins are not broke. I flushed the radiator, it is not plugged. I have good water flow throught the water pump and out the top of the head. the quad still runs awsome, but i dont know what to check next??

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

pat

Is it coming out of your radiator or the overflow tank??

My guess is bad head gasket.
Same situation happened to a friend of mine not too long ago. Bike runs fine. Blows coolant out of the overflow. It gets worse the more he is into the throttle. Doesnt actually overheat. Just have to add coolant before every ride. Turned out to be a cracked head gasket allowing pressure from the combustion chamber to enter the coolant passages and pressurize the cooling system which kept the pressurized radiator cap in the open position allowing coolant to be blown into the overflow and eventually out onto the frame/radiator/motor/ground. Replaced the head gasket and has run fine since then. It's an easy fix and I am willing to put money on it being a head gasket if you have already inspected all of the other cooling system components.
Had the same problem and mine was a head gasket also. If it is in fact getting hot though you might check jetting.

i did play with the jetting, but it did not make any differance. the engine seems to be cooler than the raditor when checked with a temp gun.
You are leaking pressure past the head gasket or theres a crack somewhere, this pressure is what is pressurizing the cooling system. Pull the head and check everything out.

I will pull the head tonight. will i need to send the head to a machine shop to check for cracks?????

P.S THANKS ,
i did'nt know what direction to take(dazed and confused)
A lot of times you can see the hairline cracks as long as you inspect very closely. Also don't assume just cause you can't see a problem with teh head gasket that it is ok, they can be hard to spot.
95% of the time its the head gasket, only 5% chance theres a crack. Odds are in your favore........LOL.
do you guys have a particular brand of head gasket to use or is a stock one fine?

THANKS PAT
cometic is pretty popular on here. although the cometic in my buddies was the brand that cracked in about 10 hours. replaced it with a cometic, though cause they do make great stuff.
If it's stock bore I like Honda, just get the topend kit. I just got a cometic for my 480.
Well, I'm currently out of commission right now because of this same scenerio. I check the thermo stat first. Put in Engine Ice coolant (recommended by a local shop). It was still over heating. Checked the water pump, it was good. Replaced the head gasket check my valves and everything else in the top end. Put it all back together and went to double check the oil filter that I just replaced 1 ride before replacing the Head Gasket and I had aluminum shavings in my oil filter. Now I'm looking at tearing into the bottom end of my engine and replacing the crank. SO good luck to you, but that is the exact thing that happened to me. Watch it closely cause I'm looking at about $1,000.00 before I'm back playing around. Mine is an 05 also.
O.K. i pulled the filter out and it does have some "flakes" , very very small and not that many, more like a small amount of glitter. oil had about 4 hours on it

X2....

Cometic work far better than any others I have used.....
ok, well back on this topic again. I'm fulling running again. I replaced the crank, piston, all the head gaskets, etc... complete rebuild of the lower end and had some top end work done as well. had my heads ported and polished, valves replaced, so on.......

but, still have the same issue!!!!

what do I need to do next, the gaskets are brand new and it's still doing the overflow trick. Someone please give me some valuable information here, before I do any damage to the bike. I can't afford to do another rebuild....I'll just sell the dang thing on EBAY first!
over flow[/b]
Not sure about about this but, think I read somewhere on here about a common fault with these bikes....something to do with the O ring at the rear of the water pump passes and lets coolant drip out the overflow, if I remember right you just need to clean maybe grease the O ring..or replace it.

Does this ring a bell with anyone else?

Hope this helps...good luck!

What coolant are you running????
Mine will do this everytime the temperature is in the 80s or better and i have been hammering it hard at lower speeds like climbing long steep hills and drag racing with no shut down between races. I have never had my fan come on ever, i also run engine ice.
