My jetting voyage

So I decided rather then guess my way through 80 dollars worth of jets (had hard start, hanging and erratic idle or surging while riding issues) decided to get a dyno jet, jet kit. I installed the needle and the designated jets and got it put back together enough to start it and make sure I didn't screw something up and oh my lord did it start. The throttle response is unbelievable and when it starts I can actually smell exsaust for a change (a good thing in my situation). I haven't been able to ride it yet but will post again after i do. Because I have a micro meter, been screwing with this for days, and gotten alot of advice and read alot of articles I can say without a doubt that both bullvine rider !!! And 450RRR understand jetting quite well and the theory that bigger means more fuel and more power is not necessarily true. Less in the correct mixture and way is blowing my mind. Also, the whole airbox lid off thing is not necessary true either. Dyno Jet as a company will not guarantee you a 5% horsepower increase throughout the entire rpm range if you remove the airbox lid and was quite adamant about that point even with the best exsaust system money can buy. However, this applies to people like me with stock machines outside of exsaust and air filter. The really built machines (cams pistons the works) will almost certainly need more airflow but for machines like mine ? The honda mechanic sat down with me and explained how big of a impact air velocity has to the point of picking up extra fuel and that velocity is lost without the lid on. People like me and my 450R need that velocity. I should mention that both the honda mechanic and dyno jet recommend loosing the snorkel but leaving the lid. I'm sure someone will throw a fit over this post but I have been chasing my tail for a hot minute on this and if this can help even one person I'm happy. I'm guessing this is kinda controversial but the honda mechanic also told me to watch for a smaller leak jet. He said at the shop they used to steal the leak jets out of the 250s to put in 450R's. I will continue my post after I take it for a extended spin.

I learned all jetting on this site(shot out to 450RRR, mixer, NorCal, sredish, hoser, CJM, and there’s a few more im missing) who iether had great write ups or advice on how to make love to these FCR carbs 😆. I still consider myself in the learning stages. I truly appreciate the comment btw. But there’s guy’s on here much more knowledgeable than me.
Yes I can probably help anyone out with tuning an fcr at this point, but that’s cuz of this site.
The crazy thing is I’ve been riding since before the 450R came out (400 ex) and I came across this site last year!!!!! Blows my mind.
I must have been living under a rock.

Anyways thanks a lot Walt for starting this thread. I hope more people can come on site and do the same thing. If and when I take my next trip I will share it with all of you. In my advice to any newcomers is “ use the search bar” you can find anything on this site. I found a thread on how to destroy America and it was very interesting lol. But I’m not gonna get into politics. Thanks for the shout out Walt I appreciate it and thanks for sharing you trip you lucky s.o.b 😂 I think I’m going to uproot my family and move west for the soul reason to ride.

Yup definitely lots to learn from this site. Without it I would probably be bringing my quad to the shop for every little thing. This forum has taught me tons and there’s always more to learn.

one universal truth i have learned. dynojet jets are ok but dont work all that great in FCR type carbs b/c of the adapter needed and what they are. they also arent nearly as exacting as keihin brand jets.

which btw can be bought at www.jetsrus.com rather cheaply. in most cases people fall within about 10 sizes tops so like 150-160, etc.

dump the snorkel. put a spray paint can lid in there (or a carb cleaner lid). go open air box or EHS outerwears cover like me

Thats where I get my jets, and for me paying a few bucks more per jet is worth it, I mean your not saving a car payment or anything going with the cheap ones. So might as well get the keihin’s. Dyno jets I have no experience with except for what I read them.
But hey if your quad is running good and your satisfied, thats what matter’s.
