hey i'm in the market/researching for a new lap top computer. it will mainly be used for homework, music/picture storage, watching movies, and surfing the web. i dont game at all on computers. that being said i want around 17" of screen (for movies) or bigger, a larger hard drive, alot of ram storage, and fast internet speed. i also plan on getting some kind of recording program, because i am very involved in recording and writing music. i was thinking a macbook but if i can find a PC thats a good price that alot of people like or are happy with i would get that. thanks for any input.

anyone dislike thier macbook? like it? any good high perf. PCs i should look into?

I use a computer like you stated, without gaming.... i have the 15 inch powerbook G4, it wont die. It is 8 years old, gets used every day mainly for the web, and it is all original, hard drive, superdrive etc. Its 6 years old and has a gig of ram and burns dvd's. To me it is the best choice for a computer I ever made, it was way ahead of its time and seems like it will run forever, trouble free. However it was not cheap though. I am in IT for a living and I have 3-4 different OS's and computers that I have to use every day, I still like the Mac the most. But I refrain from arguing about which is best and all the kiddy crap. The other day I bought a brand new Dell desktop with a 22 inch display, fro 800 bucks , it has Vista and is "OK"

I also don't want to start the "my brand is better than you're brand" crap but, avoid Toshiba, Fujitsu and cheaper Dell laptops. I also am in IT and have had all HP products. I have 3 HP laptops and 3 HP desktops and have never had a problem with any of them in the last 7 years. Just a memory upgrade in the older ones.

I'm not a fan of Mac, but that's because I don't have one and don't really play around on them. I know a lot of people get them because they are into the music/graphic field. They work well for that.

We have had A LOT of issues with the brands I listed not to get.
I have a Macbook. I mainly use it for photos, music and internet. Has built in wireless, so if you are around a signal, you can usually pick it up. Makes it great if you want to take it to different rooms in your house. I have no regrets with my purchase. The one thing I dont like is if you need help with something and want to purchase apple customer care, it is almost $200, but thats what mac forums are for.

I love my macbook, I use it for exactly what you are describing, I owned many different PCs and I can say my Mac is so much better than anyone I have or use!

Another IT dork here. Although I'm a network guy, not really in the PC repair these days; here's my experience. As PCs go they're all close to the same. The internal components are just as likely to fail on one as another. If you don't have the knowledge to work on one yourself, as much as I hate them, I'd just look for something with a decent warranty that covers repair and possibly think about extended coverage(no longer than 3 years max though, by then your computer is a dinosaur). The college I work for has all our contracts through Dell, and we don't have too many issues with them on the whole. I've been very happy with their customer service reps most of the time. I've also dealt with HP customer service on 3 machines for friends and it has been the absolute worst experience of my life. They are all outsourced and it's extremely hard to get something to take care of your issue without going through 10 different people all with accents so thick it's hard to understand them. I don't doubt that Dell outsources some of their support as well, but in my experience it's always been someone in the US.

Here's my .02 on the Mac vs. PC thing. Yes, if you have the funds for a Mac, they are terrific....what do you expect from a company that makes both the hardware and software to run on it? However, they are overpriced, and if you're looking for performance, more can be had for your buck in a PC.

Macbook is the best.... comes with all the software you could ever need on it. battery last for ever. way more cool (useable) features, faster, wireless internet is better, I can't think of anything I like better about my old dell or micron. Mac is that wasabi salad.... apple has stepped up their game big time.

personally id go with a macbook and use bootcamp to load windows xp on there. also if you want a desktop you can buy the parts and build one the way you want it. thats what i did. atho it can get pricy.

and by the way your pc shouldnt have anything to do with internet
Nothing but hp in my house, 2 laptops and 3 desktops. My lap top is almost 2 years old and no problems with it. 1gb ram is fine for me, pages load plenty fast for me.

FASHO.
and also, there are VERY few viruses for Macs. These computers are the best. Period. Save up for it, its way worth it. I have a Macbook, came with leopard.
80GB
1GB ram

oh and also. I give major props to the apple service they provide, they havent hassled one bit about anything in my experiences with them over the last two to three years.
I screwed up my older Macbook, told them what happend exactly, and they gave me a Brand New Macbook(this one im on right now), which has 20GB more than i had in the old one, and has the 1gig ram which i had upgraded on my old one.

Apple overall is a great product and they are very nice people.
G
except their prices are outrageous
haha yes that is very true
