It's supposed to have some side to side play. Now, if you can move it up and down, you've got problems.
how much play should a crank have
i was moving the crank rod back and forth and it moves just very very slightly is that right?

Big rod end side clearance service limit is 0.75 mm (0.030 in)
Stick a feeler gauge in between the big end of the connecting rod and one of the thrust washers. Either side, it doesn't matter.
