Just checking to see if anyone has done this. My 06 Plastics look like complete ass. Dont want to drop the cash for new ones just yet so thought about sanding them smooth with a medium-fine grit sand paper and going with the flat look for a while. Thoughts?? ANyone ever tried this?

I have never sanded them but i have polished them with my buffer and some plastic compound on a slow speed.
Don't do it! I did on my 250 and it made them look a lot worse.
DON"T DO IT get a heat gun and run over them and they will shine again we have done this to a few and it last
I've seen someone do it before with black plastics and I thought it looked really good.

But I have a feeling if you do it with the red plastics they will just look pink.
maybe sand and then put a heat gun to it?

Great response. I also figured it would look best on black plastics. BUT it never even crossed my mind about turning them pink.

I may just have to roll with the scratched red for a while. Dont feel like keeping up with buffing and shining and I dont trust myself with a heat gun.
LOL man it is really easy just keep moving and it will take alot of the scratches out and turn it bright and shiny again....just don't stay in one place and trust me you will see it bring the color out
I tried with black and it turned to A*s. good thing ite was just a small portion. I am hoping that I can fix it with a heat gun after reading other topics about it.
Plastic renew, works pretty damn good for 20 bucks

was just going to recommend the plastic renew, works great, but my boots wear it off quickly.
if u sand them they will look worse than they do now.
what if you sand them and then run the heat gun on them???.... that might work!
the only successfull ones ive seen were on a yfz, sanded and painted flat black.
The front of my hood faded and turned grey from dirt and dust I guess......... I think I might try the heat gun on it..... if it turns to crap, I'll just buy another one.

I'll post some pics of the result when I get back home mid October.
i bought a 2o dollar heat gun from wal-mart and it help alot on mine, shined up pretty good just dont leave it in one spot to long
I tried to sand my black plastics to get the flat look and it looked like a horses ass sewed up with a logging chain.
Don't waist your money on Plastic Renew unless your just trying to shine it up to sell to someone you don't like....

Here is a link to a review that I did for ATVriders (EXriders then):

I requested that they let me change it or delete it but not happening. They did change my username though.

Long story short, it is a crap load of work to do it right. And the coating wears off way too quick and you end up with plastic that looks like you just sanded it (Because you did). Within 6 months of submiting that we had new white plastic.
I had planned on creating a thread on polishing plastics. But after sanding and polishing mine I just don't feel good about suggesting it. I experimented on my old fenders and finally talked myself into sanding and polishing my new black plastics that had some scratches when I pulled them out of the box.

Too make a long story short, I sanded them with 800 grit through 3000 grit and then buffed them out with a tripoli rouge followed by white rouge. I used the same buffer and buffing wheels (vented flannel buffs) that I used on my aluminum parts. They turned out looking like glass but it was alot of work and the polishing process is not easy. One wrong move and you can easily melt the plastic. I tried slowing down the speed on the buffing wheels but then they do not produce enough heat to achieve a glass type finish.

If all you want to do is your hood.... I would give it a try. But I would not feel good about recomending polishing the fenders unless they had some polishing equipment and some polishing experiance. Kinda like trying to use a tourch to re-glaze the plastics... very easy to screw them up.

One last thing, if you look at my rebuild pics... those are the fenders I sanded and polished. They look better then they did out of the box from Honda.
