So I have finished the first phase of my build. It is an 07 electric start I bought in stock form. It had set for quite a while was suppose to be low hour. When I bought this thing it was barely running, it would kill the battery before it would start, the tires were rotten, when I got home it still had the stock foam filter on it and it was so rotten it disintegrated in my hands, fuel leaked from the carb and tank. In other words it was in sore shape.
The goal of this quad is for a desert/dune build. I have no name for my quad yet, all my quads have a name but they have to earn it and I don't have the the seat time on it yet.
So what did I do:
  • Full service, every fluid changed out for fresh new fluid, adjusted the valves, chain and set sag on the suspension
  • Relaced the tank with a enlarged IMS tank
  • Fixed the Carb and rejetted to 165 main 45 pilot and a 55 leak jet (I adjusted the timing of the shot 1/2 turn out)
  • Modded the air box with 1 inch holes, new uni dual foam filter and a outwears around the filter itself.
  • Ripped out the old exhaust and replaced it with a monster big bore exhaust system
  • Installed new Odor Advents 23 inch fronts and 22 inch rear.
  • Installed a Hot Cams Stage 2 camshaft
  • Replace the battery with a lightweight lithium battery (new battery also has more AH than the stock one and 5 less pounds!)
Before :
Tire Wheel Vehicle Plant Automotive tire

AFTER
Tire Wheel Vehicle Automotive tire Automotive design

Phase 2 will be a complete suspension redo.
I plan on using the OEM shocks have them revalved, 2 inch extensions and dual rate spring up front, and in the rear a new link, revalve and single rate spring in the rear. I also plan on going with a full Ricochet skid plate set. Hopefully this will all be finished before my big St Anthony's trip in June. 🤞
If you are interested in seeing what I did you can follow this build on my youtube channel "Torque your nuts Offroading" I have a playlist dedicated to this build. Thanks to the entire forum for helping with this build, this is a great community compared to the toxicity of FB!

Looks real good, good choice on the obor advents, you went big on the size (im assuming for dunes?) Im getting a pair myself when taxes come in. But 20 in rear, 22 upfront is best suited for my riding (trails tight corners etc). But looks real clean. Are you putting nerfs on it?

Yes the plan is to add nerfs but suspension and skids first. I chose this size for two reasons
First, when I use my knobbies, it is usually in the, coastal mountains, high alpine (5000 to +7000ft), or High Desert (think Western Nevada). This terrain is 3000 to +7000ft with steep washed out trails, the rocks/ granite outcroppings can be pretty big, knarly, and unexpected. Its more like fast rocky rutted sections followed by just a sh*tload of rocks, that you have to pick your way thru, and then its back on the throttle. The additional inch of ground clearance gives me a lot of confidence to to go fast on my Raptor; so I am hoping it does so on my 450. When I rode my 400s I destroyed more than my share sprockets and rotors, not a great way to start a trip. My 400s always have and still use 20 inch rears because they do rob a little bit of power and your ability to pitch it sideways at will, but I think the lighter obors will do fine with the 450.
Second reason is that it has been my experience that the more rubber you put between the ground and wheel; the more durable your tires are to a puncture. (It SUCKS to be 20 miles out from the truck and hear that dreaded "Dong" as you hit a rock. Ask me how I know!) It also gives you a little more ability to adjust the tires to the ridding conditions.
I do know that I will have to regear, which I will do after I take it for a few rides. Then we will see how I like the size.

Cool suspension will be a huge difference (as you no) and the tires makes sense. you have me thinking now, because i ride similar trails (rock rutted stuff). Then fast stuff, back to rock &so on. I cant seem to find a skid plate for my LSR swinger and linkage, so it’s exposed. I dodge the big stuff (hense the tight turning) but it’s impossible to avoid hitting the linkage all together. So the extra clearance would help me. And your right the big tires take a better beating on the trails, but slows the quad down a little and makes the handling a little stiffer.
maybe ill go bigger with the next set.
plus your quad looks real beefy with the new tires. I like it 👌🏼
