Honda's TRX450R manual mentions two oil types: one with molybdenum added, and one without. I can't find anything on why there are two types, and which to choose. Any ideas?
i would run your fist couple of oil changes with good ol honda oil. after that in the engine side you can switch to a synthetic. i would do the same thing for the tranny but i used honda tranny oil for the 2 strokes it was approved in the manual.
First, I heard the Honda oil is not that good. After a long period of time it gums up. Second, never use a synthetic on a high performance cam it's bad for the cam. Third, I use the Valvaline 10-40 for ATV's for the engine and tranny. Its a good oil!
I run Motul 4T (it has molydbnum) in all my quads, never seen any wear (400ex never missed a beat). But I also use the 10W50 (I believe, need to go look) because down here in Texas it gets a little hot.
My neighbour runs Motul in his R 6 and says its really good oil, and his bike runs cooler cuz it is very well lube and the engine dosnt work so hard at idle. Also he said motul will double your warraty so, i dunno i might look into motul oil next
honda does not make oil it is bidded on and who ever will sell them oil the cheapest and bottle it in honda bottles is what oil you get it could be different every year or it will change as their contract does, you are better off with a brand that manufactures oil
