Well I've drug my old 05 R out of mothballs and as usual the carb is shitted up. Tore it all down and cleaned it put it all back together and I don't remember where the adjustment needles need to be set. Could you guys refresh my pea brain ? It's a 05. 450R with the full HRC kit installed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is only one adjustment on the carb, its an air/fuel screw and usually it should be about 2.5 turns out from fully in.

No other adjustments possible without changing jets.

So I got my quad running. Seems ok for a few mins. Hop on and take a ride everything's running ok then it all goes south. Popping and banging thru the exhaust , acting like it's running out of fuel. Feather the throttle to get it back to the garage.

Tear carb down and clean thoroughly, reassemble check filters new air filter lets try to run it again. Takes 3 or 4 kicks to get it running and it starts. Seems to set and idle fine. Engine spools up about 1/4 throttle and the popping starts and the engine noses over. Bury the throttle wide open and it just dies like there's no fuel. Just a hair of black smoke comes out of exhaust. Nothing to get my concern.

So, I tear the carb apart once again and pull the HRC parts out and reinstall the factory parts in the carb. Start the quad up and it idles nice and has a little more throttle up to mid range then the banging and popping starts and when you bury the throttle wide open it just acts like its out of fuel. I was 2.5 turns out on the a/f screw on the bottom of the carb with the hrc parts in carb. Changed a/f needle to 1.5 turns out with stock parts in carb. The needle on the side of carb by the idle speed adjuster is run all the way in,I think that where it goes.?!?!?

Any ideas guys ??

Have you checked your fuel petcock to see if it is free flowing? You do have screens on the petcock inside the tank. I'd start there if you really think it is starving for fuel. Your description of it starting up then idling and then dieing sounds alot like a fuel delivery problem. It starts, idles or you may get a short ride before it dies because the carb bowl is full with fuel as it should be then is uses up that fuel faster than it is replenished as it flows from the tank.

Sounds like its lacking fuel. The needle should be in the middle from the flat end 3rd slot down as well.

Id start by making sure the petcock is working well and flowing and you have enough gas in there and the petcock is on and not reserve. Also the screw you mean by the idle adjuster? That just controls the bowl and if you loosen it, it will release all the fuel in the bowl down into the hose on the bowl and empty the carb.

Did you clean out the accelerator pump?

Thanks for the reply guys. I've installed a brand new petcock from Honda. Fuel flow brought the gas line seems fine. The needle next to the idle adjust is just used for draining bowl, thanks.

Any other ideas ??

Ok today I pulled carb back off inspected all clean once again. Fresh gas in tank here we go again. What I've noticed now is the engine runs perfect on the choke. Take the choke off and it starts that bogging crap.

So my question is why does the engine rev up fine with the choke and bog the engine with the choke off ?

Too lean possibly. What size main jets in there? Did you clean the jets and carb very thoroughly?

CJM, I just put a new in pack rebuild kit in carb. The bike has entire HRC kit installed. I put it in 5 days after I bought the bike new in 05 because I was so disappointed in the performance. I have since installed a stock carb kit,I think. I could give you the part number of the kit. I can't see good enough to read the numbers on the jets. I tried to decipher the numbers with a mag glass but still can't make out for sure. I could get my wife to see the numbers if I need to. I don't see very good any more. Thanks for your time and all of your help is appreciated sir. :)

Make sure your vent tube on the gas cap isn't plugged. Those shorty tubes with the cap especially like to get plugged and then the tank can't flow enough fuel. Also, are you running with the airbox lid on or off and is it jetted accordingly?

Its def too lean if you put it back to stock. They come lean from the factory.

x 2 what CJM said. If you have the full HRC kit and you put the jetting back to stock...you are way too lean! The full HRC kit gives you a modified airbox lid, just that lid alone will make your bike run lean (more air than fuel). I know it's harder to read those jets as the years go by but it is very important to know what you are putting in as your main jet. Ask your wife to help you read it and let us know, also what is your elevation?

Alright guys, the tank vent line is clear , that I know for sure. Onto the jetting , i'm going to pull the carb tomorrow again and have my wife help me get the numbers off the jets. I was racking my brain trying to remember what carb parts honda put in the hrc kit. Was it the main jet, needle and needle seat ? I don't remember there being to many carb parts to install. Can I get just a hrc carb kit to reinstall ? I've been playing with bikes for 30 yrs and never had one make me wanna pull my hair out like this one. Oh yeah , I have that scary fast thing installed on air box side of the carb as well. I don't think it does a **** bit of good but I put it in when the bike was new because the honda shop said it really helps on power.
