Cam Selection

Im getting a ported head soon with +1 valves all around, i mostly dune drag and ride. Currently i have the early HRC cam and love the power. A HC stage 3 is comming with my head, and yes the head has KW springs as well.

Question is.....is it ok to run a stage 3 on a stockbore? Im almost positive it is. But has anyone tested the HRC VS the HC-3? Does the HC-3 make more power all around a tad less up top?

Just curious what you guys would do. And Please dont say stage 2.I like a lot of top end.

Thanks-Kip

theres a few people who have ran the stage 3 in stock bores with good results..

hc3 probally better all around over the hrc
the stage 3 is probably the way to go, my question to you is if you already have the neccessary hard ware to run a better cam why not do it. i would throw in a 208 which should fullfill all of your needs. the main reason why i hadn't done the 208 is because of the cost of springs but once i got them the HC3 was out of my bike.
I dont want to mess with having to degree them. Plus Webs are a lil too hard on the valvetrain IMO. But will i have to degree my Stage 3 also? i Have heard they are off to start with.

-Kip
no you don't have to degree that thing. just drop it in and run it, that is the way i ran mine all last season.
bad are u running Kw springs with the 208, I've heard there not the best springs for that cam

and u don't have to degree the stage 3 or even the 208 for that matter, but by retarding the a little u ca shift the power to the top
Alright. Sweet. What do you think +1s all around will do for a stockbore powerband? I have ESR intake, stock carb, HRC/HMF exhaust, venom 12.25:1 and HRC Kit as of now.

yeah, im gonna run the kw springs. i think it will be alright especially since my dunner is gonna get a lot of work this season. lol damn those long travel shocks...

i would definately want to run a little more compression for that cam, but that may just be me. as far as the valves are concerned my stock bore motor runs stock valves with no problem.
So are you saying a Stage three and 12.25:1 is not a good way to go? Just curious. And what do big valves really do for the powerband. I know the plus one exhaust kicks in a lil more tq but what good will plus 1 intakes do me? Its Blackdrags head so i cant really choose what valve sizes.

-Kip
i think the top end will still be nice and the extra compression from going to like a 13.5:1 or 14:1 would help a lot for added bottom end and overall power.
ya id want more compression with the bigger cam,

maybe just stick with the hrc
went i went to high comp and hc3 it make me realize how much power i was sacrificing at the top end. the added fuel cost is well worth it
I run a Stage 3 on my stock bore 13:1 bike. I also use +1 valves in all four corners. She runs purdy good.

what piston did u go with. cp?
There isnt much difference on the bottom between the early HRC and the stage 3. Both require alot of compression if you want to keep the bottom end power.
Im running the Early HRC now and am happy with my power. Would i see a power increase if i went to a Stage three once i got the ported head? Or would it be better off with the HRC.

Also.....how does the 208 compare to these?

Kip I hope this doesn't come off the wrong way, but you should really be talking to who ever is going to do your porting. They should have a package that they have tested that works best with there porting layout. Just because this works for one doesn't mean it will work for others. I have been there and done that. I took this part that was suppose to be badass and that part and put together a 47hp turd. And I spent alot of money doing it. Some cams work better with big ports and big valves others just the opposite. On the compression issue I would run as much as you can get and afford. If your looking to stay pump gas stay around 12 or so. If you want to run a vp fuel or a high octane race fuel I would be looking for 13.5 or higher. Compression seems to build power everywhere in the band.

So have you picked your guy for the porting?

Dac,

I stated in previous posts that this is BlackDrag450s head so i cannot choose the valve sizes. I CAN however choose what cam i am running. I already have a venom 12.25:1 and want to stay on PUMP. I will either be running the.....

HC stage 3
Early HRC
Possibly Web 208

All i want to know is if the stage 3 or the 208 will pack a lot more punch than the early HRC on my stockbore.
AND i was just curious what +1s all around would do to a stockbore powerband. If the head was gonna be new, i would not have gotten +size intakes. AND the head comes with a stage 3. That is the only reason im asking. Im not gonna go out and buy a stage 3.

Also, since i am not choosing my head setup, buying it 15 hours used, do you guys think there is any way that +1 valves all around will lose power over std size valves or +1 ex?

I know that oversize valves are not necessary in most conditions but they are there and are they going to hurt anything??

-Kip
is there a reason why you dont want to run the stage 2 hotcam? If i were you i would run the 208 or the stage 2. I really like the power of my stage 2, mabey its jsut my riding style who knows.
