My TRX450R has been burning about a quart of oil every day. i was woundering if this is normal for this quad. The quad runs great n there is no blue smoke or nething but every morining when i go out i need to add a little oil. Im woundering if there is sumthing that i should check or worry about considering this.

Try cheking your valves or loose oil plugs

WHat would the valves have to do wit it?? THe valves shouldn't affect the oil level. correct me if im wrong but the valves only control the intake and exhaust, and do not have nething to do wit the oil.

Nothing more than a guess on my part, but maybe if the valves were "off" it would cause it to burn oil more quickly because of the engine not running how it should be?? Once again, just a guess...

OK i can kinda see your point there, but 4 stroke engines regardless of how there r running do not burn oil. I can see if the rings were gone or wore out but its a brand new engine and there is no signs of oil being burnt. WHen the piston goes up the oil coats the sleve, then as the piston drops the rings scrape the oil off the selve. But i dunno i dont think it could be the rings because its a brand new engine and has less then 20 hrs on it. i dunno kinda fusturating....im going to take it in soon n have it checked out. Does nebody else have sum simple solutions to fix this problem??
THanks

Ok im sry about how much i add i musta been a little off, i add about 50ML n i guess i just messed that up somwhere along the line. I check my oil everymorning b4 i start it because the oil has time to settle over the period that its sitting. when i check it its normaly lower than the half mark on the glass circle on the right side of the engine. agian im sorry i screwed that up. THanks

Your valves have alot to do with your oil. If your valves are not opening or closing all the way then you loose compression. this causes excess oil to be burned through the exhaust...However you said it does not smoke. If valves where the problem it would be smoking out the exhaust. If the problem was rings, it would smoke. I really dont think you have a problem, mine dont burn oil but I dont keep as accurate of a reading as you do.....Do you see on the oil window the little min, and max lines....those are there for a reason....when you fill it up to the max mark, you dont have to add oil unless its below the min level.....there is alot of room for error....Honda also designs thier high performance engines this way...Here is why. Its a high RPM engine, IF it burns a little oil at high RPM's, then your engine is safe.....My Prelude redlines at 8100 RPM's...and they designed it to burn a littl e oil too if you are running at 7 ot 8000 rpm's all the time then you burn oil...If you just drive around normally, It does not burn oil....Part of Honda reliabilaty.....so DONT WORRY ABOUT IT, and keep oil in it...If it starts running like poop, or smoking...then worry about it......Hope this helps. I'm good friends with a tech at a honda dealer and he said that there is a bulletin about the 450r using oil with extreme use. Any Honda people in here that can confirm?

I have had my r for a very long time....I never have to add oil...it goes from oil change to oil change without having to add any oil at all. I do not have any problem with it burning any oil what so ever....

My R burns oil. It did since I got it 3 months ago, not alot but when i change the oil(which is done weekly) following procedure and topped up just below the fill mark on the window. After 3 or 4 tanks through it in 2 days sometimes one day the oil level is just above the low mark so ill add a touch when needed. I dont worry about, it does smoke alittle if is warming up and i blip the throttle and only a little bit. Everything works fine lots of power. My buddy just got the YFZ450LE and we are both stock exept i got the 13tooth front sprocket and we are pretty much same speed so i figure nothings wrong. You by the whole bottle anyways i just get to use the rest of it..

mine burned quite a bit between roughly 5 - 15 hours. It still uses a small amount now, but it has decreased significantly now that I am at about 25 hours.

I researched the crf engine pretty extensively and found it to be fairly common for these type engines when new.

Snow - congrats on the good race in iowa. Do you know of any other bulletins that are out?
