The HRC kit comes with an adjustable needle. But sounds like you didn't want the HRC kit. I made the same choice. I added the DMC slip on and right from the start you could tell it was way too lean. Next I opened the air box up. Cut it out to look just like the HRC lid. There is a "how to" post somewhere on here with pictures. Next I added the Pro flow air filter.Your going to have to rejet this thing then you"ll really wake up a sleeping gaint. I changed the pilot jet to a 48 and the main to a 170 using genuine keihin jets. While your messing with the carb go ahead an add an adjustable fuel screw. That way you"ll be able to just reach down and make minor adjustment due to temp and humitity changes. For the Needle I found tha the HRC needle is really the needle from the CRF 450 dirtbike. The same motor our's was designed after. I installed it using the 3rd clip.
The idle had to be turned up a bit . It's running like a rocket!! What a difference it makes. Remember just adding the slip on will make it run way lean. Do you hear all that cracking and popping? Also remember if you let more air in with an aftermarket filter and more air out with your DMC then you must let in more gas or risk burning it up. There are quite a few post on how to rejet just by loosing up th eclamps and turning it, but I did it the long way by removing the airbox then taking the whole carb out. It's not that hard. Just dont strip any screws. To get this needle just go to your honda shop and tell the man you want the needle from an 04 or 05 crf 450. It's the same carb that on the on the 2006 450r. Hope this helps
