I have a Honda trx 450 er stock. I replaced the starter clutch and after I put it all together it would want to start. I checked the timing, fuel, spark, compression and they all seem to be good. I have no idea why it doesn’t want to start. Has anyone else had this problem?

This may sound dumb, but……. Try turning up your idle screw. I had starting issues on my er and it ended up being that simple. Not to say thats your issue, cuz you just replaced starter clutch. But try it anyways. Up your idle!

I tried and it didn’t work. You have any more ideas?
Did it run before you put the starter clutch in? And are you sure you installed it correctly? If timing, fuel, spark, & compression is all good then that narrows it down to something electrical maybe. Does it crank good but doesn’t turn over?

Have you checked valve clearance? That could be an issue too. I would check valve clearance, if thats good too I’d test stator battery voltage etc. check all grounds too.

What kind of electrical part would not make it want to start?
The stator, battery, theres fuses, rectifier. Even if a ground wire is loose or not grounded could prevent it from starting. Can you explain what its doing when trying to start it please? Is it cranking strong and not turning over? (Starting). Or is it cranking week? Or is it just making a clunk noise when pushing the button?

It turns over as it should but sometimes when I add starting fluid it makes a werid noise then it goes away. And also I tried bump starting it and the solenoid went out.

Oh ok so it does turn over! And it does run? When was the last time you cleaned the carb and checked valve clearance?

It turns over but doesn’t run even if I try to bump start it. I didn’t clean the carb but I had a buddy check the valves and he said the were within spec.
If it ran before you put in the starter clutch, then you may have made a mistake, I’d go back and double check everything you replaced is correct. If it is and everything else is in spec (timing, valves, decomp, fuel, spark) like you ssy it is, that leaves electrical. Id check battery, voltage, grounds, and stator.
my guess is the stator it is common on 06+ so test it.

I checked everything and it still won’t start
All electrical ,stator specifically, is good? If so im not sure what else it could be. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can chime in and help out. Hope you get it figured out.

You know what bro, check the carb sensor switch, make sure its making comtact to the throttle cable pulley, its a u shape clip, ive read about them popping out of the groove.
Ive read threads on here where someone cant get it started, and everyone is mentioning spark, timing, electrical, fuel with no avail, and it ended up being a little sensor. So check both carb and throttle sensors if they’re not bypassed already. Maybe its something that simple.
