i gott alittle bit of noise coming from the clutch side of the motor. the atv seems to be vibrating alittle also. it runs fine and does not seem to make the noise when moving only at idle. no mods all stock.

You gave a pretty open ended question. It could be a ton of things causing it.

-maybe you chipped a piece of clutch basket off and now it's off balance or something like that
-anything lose will rattle at lower speeds and you won't be able to hear it at higher speeds due to engine noise

does it change at all when the clutch lever is pulled in?

no not at all. i have read about the balancer gear bearing going bad. im new at the atv thing. but i will be doing it myself. what would be the 1st step i need to take.
Take the clutch cover off and go from there.

I would remove the clutch and basket and see if any of the gears are loose?

I'm just guessing here but you'll have to do some investigative resesrch maybe, it's hard to say without being there.

How loud is the noise?

metalllic like valve chatter?

I've heard a lot of guys talking about crank bearings going out from crank slap but that was on 2005 and older mostly.

not very loud at all. it kinda sounds like a timing chain slap
Not sure, maybe a bearing or something with the balancer? Water pump?

Maybe someone else on here can give you something more.

ok thanks
These motors are very loud. Especially if you still have the stock exhaust. I'm not saying you don't have a problem, but you did say you were new to quads. If you are not used to hearing these motors, it can sound like there is something wrong.

Pulling the clutch cover takes a few minutes with an 8mm socket and if you get the bike propped up at a 45 degree angle, you wont have to drain the tranny fluid. (i usually run a ratchet strap from a high point on the frame to something sturdy like the back of my truck or a work bench lagged into a wall.)Take a 10mm socket and take out the 6 bolts and check all the springs. Next pull the pressure plate off and check that. Also take a look at the washer type bearing that sits on the inside of the pressure plate. Ckeck all the clutch discs for chips or excessive wear. Look at/wiggle the clutch basket looking for excessive play. That should keep you busy for a little bit. Let us know if you find anything. Remember that these are loud motors. Especially if it is a 2006 or later model.

will do thanks. yeah it ainjt that loud alittle louder then my friends z400.
Yea, I just bought an 07' coming off an 05' and my brand new bike is horribly loud making the same noise you decribed. Its kind of scary, but its normal. I just hope I can distinguish crank noises from this noise if it ever arises to the occasion.
My 07 is making the same awful noise more from the clutch side also. (tapping rattling) Im going to try the counterbalance bearings in a few days.
The noise is still there after changing the crank beaings.
The noise gets louder as it warms up and I can hear it more when I let off the gas which leads me to beleave it's the counterbalance bearings...i hope so anyway.
I will post again after I chage the bearings.

Mine as well...
The bearings did not fix the noise...didn't think they would.
I'm now replacing the crank, piston. and cylinder....

are you sure that you even have a problem? found any shavings/broken pieces? that is a lot of money to just throw at something to try and fix a problem you don't evne know for sure that you have...
Thanks for your help but i'm sure...the noise gets louder the hotter it gets.
I split the cases and the crank is just worn..this motor has a lot of hours on it...lots of play in all the wrong places.
