EFI Conversion on 05... thoughts, ideas, concerns, other...

Ok so I was on ebay looking up FCR carbs and I have come across several people selling complete EFI kits from off the 09+ dirtbikes... I mean wiring, ecm, flywheel, sensors, throttle... like i said, pretty much everything but fuel pump. Now heres what I was thinking, would it be possible to retro fit the dirtbike EFI system onto an older 05 engine... I live at 5200 ft and ride up into 7000+... EFI could be very nice... So I was just wanting to know if anyone has attempted this or if anyone has any insight onto the matter... thanks yall...

So it is true... I am awesome.

The CRF flywheel is a smaller diameter than the TRX's. The flywheel's 12 teeth will be too far away for your VR sensor to see. And the CRF uses 2 VR sensors to read those 12 teeth. Your left crankcase cover has no mounting for the second VR sensor. Furthermore, the '09 CRF flywheel may not be compatible with the taper of the snout of your crank. I'd like confirmation on this last bit. It'd help me out greatly (desiring to use 2009 450R flywheel on 2006 CRF450X with megasquirt).

I'd say your best bet is to pick up a Microsquirt, machine the long/short teeth from your flywheel, press on the trigger wheel of your choice, and pick up cheap LT-R450 components for everything else (especially that nice external fuel pump).

Thank you for your input, I am still learning a lot about all the variations of the Honda 450 engine. And I already do a lot of wiring with deutsch connectors on heavy equipment... Im a mechanic at a coal mine in Wyoming.. But like I said I am still learning about these engines, thanks for your help.

Just wondering, is the kit you are looking at a closed loop or open loop system? from what I read, most dirt bike and atv engines are open loop due to the preprogrammed maps.

The TRX450ER FSM refers to it as the "Ignition Pulse Generator". You can use it with aftermarket EFI to detect a more standard trigger pattern to precisely control spark. It's in the box in the attached picture.
