I know that most of you guys and gals here on this site, have moved far beyond these mods, but I thought there might be a few like myself that have new R’s or are just now getting to mod their quad. So, I thought I would do a little step by step comparison for opening up the R and the stage 2 Hot Cam.

My son and I own almost identical 450Rs (mine is about 5 months older) so we put the stage 2 in his bone stock quad and then begin to open it up step by step.

My quad has a Dr. D slip on, HRC needle (3rd clip), 180 main, open airbox and Uni filter. To keep rider input and traction issues to a minimum, we ran the quads on pavement, rolling starts in 1st gear. By the way I am about 35# heavier if you want to factor that in.

With my R set up as above, against his completely stock R, I would pull him about 3 quads through 4th gear and then walk away approximately 2 mph on top end.

The same race, except his now has the stage 2 hot cam. I pull him about 1 quad through 4th gear and top end was about even, maybe me slightly pulling away.

Next for his we dropped in the HRC needle, put in a 178 main and jerked off the airbox lid. Same race, now he pulls me about 2 quads through 4th and top end quite frankly IT AIN’T EVEN CLOSE! It seemed like 5 mph (might be stretching a little) but it seemed like a lot. He was pulling 3rd gear wheelies setting right in the middle of the seat with the 14 tooth front sprocket. Needless to say we were both dancing in the middle of the road.

We also took the stock baffle out; it really did not make a big notable difference. Who knows, it did not hurt the performance any but, I guess it is what ever you like.

I hope this might help someone make the choice a little easier than we did we researched, pestered people and just in general made annoyances out of ourselves for weeks before we finally settled on the stage 2. In the end though at this stage in our modifications, we could not be happier with it.

Next the stage 2 goes in mine. I can’t wait to see how it does with the Dr. D. Besides I can’t suck the back tit forever.

Later,
G.D.

Thanks for the info. This part surprised me. The stock exhaust baffle is sooo small, I figured you would have seen a significant difference with it out.

i liked hearing the results too. i was surprised he gained that much top speed. it feels like i don't have any more top speed with a full sparks pipe and hrc cam, but i sure get there much quicker. it seems like the 185 mainjet is a tad to rich but i could be wrong. i am running a stock filter with the hrc lid and dust guard in place.

Thanks for the report! :)

About the top speeds cal ...

Your top speed WILL NOT VARY with any engine mod if you were pulling the gearing before the mod. You have to change a sprocket or tires thumbsup.gif GETTING to top speed is a whole different story post-696-1105671383.gif

I am sure you are right Kid, he was probably just getting to top speed much quicker than I was, and it just seemed like he was walking away from me.

Kid you can do whatever you think is best with it. Whatever will be the most helpful.

to me it does seem like you can gain top speed with engine mods because you can pull more rpms in the top gear. it may be small but i think it is possible. how far did you race?
TrX450rKiD
On the R, with stock gearing, you pull all the way to the limiter (9800). So even with the mods, you are still getting stuck at that limiter. Also, I forgot to add that you can obviously gain top speed with a new rev limiter ...

Cals we were not going very far, maybe 200 yards, as we were still in the 2nd stage of breakin on the Hot Cam. But it just seemed as though he was steadly walking away without any gains or slowing his progress on my end.

Kid, you answered a question that I have been thinking about all day. In its present form, my R has never tapped the revlimiter, except for one time when I was drafting off of a pickup, but even then when I would pull out away from the draft it would get off of the revlimiter. So, I would assume that whatever mods you did up to the point that you did tap the limiter, would result in a higher top speed. We have not run the stage 2 quad long enough or hard enough yet to know if it will reach that goal.

One other thing that I noticed after we installed the cam and opened everything up; even with the 14 tooth sprocket on I actually watched him feather the clutch a little and take off without applying any throttle.

Thanks guys,
G.D.

Just for chits Duke.... take the DRd off your bike and try it on your sons to see how it is with the stage 2, would be fun to try... then ull know wat to expect wink.gif

I know i would lol.

I also have the stage 2 cam.... and i can hit the rev limiter... with 15 36 gearing.... it took a long time of WFOT but it did.... i think it took 30 secondes..... i would let off every few a bit... i was stunned.. and so was my dad when he heard from behind on his DS650 my revlimiter kick in lol.

No need to do that Ryan, I have the stage 2 for my R, just need the time to put it in. I'll let you know.

i haven't hit the rev limiter with stock tires and stock gearing yet either, well in 5th gear anyways. i run a full sparks pipe and the hrc kit.

so does the HC2 not help you out at ALL on bottom end or is it a strictly mid to top, because i am wanting something that will be good all the way through without a web or any other cam that requires sinking the valves and cutting springs
