Could use a few pointers to make me a little more competive. At 47 yrs old, I'm pretty much out there just for fun. I been riding for 3 yrs now. With the exception of a few XC races, I have done 2 MX races so far. I ride in 30+ class. Those guys smoked me last weekend. thumbdown.gif I was talking to one guy and asked him how long he had been riding and he said........." Since I was four". I started riding quads when I was 44. LOL Then, heres one of the other guys in my class. http://www.worksperformance.com/html/spons...ane_wilson.html How the heck do I compete with this dude? I did figure out I can get a better shot off the line in 2nd gear. Cornering is my weakness and I need to work on that one. I am also getting tired really quick. half way thru the moto, I'm wore out. Maybe I just need to accept the fack I'm too frickin old? What do you guys do to stay in shape?

Lots and lots of cardio. Also no smoking, and during race season no drinking. This summer I ran 3.5 miles everyday and swam laps every other day. The swimming really helped I think because it expands your lung capacity so your not always trying to catch your breath and makes things like jogging easier. Also lifted weights. Low weight and high reps going from machine to machince in a cycle without a break in order to increase endurance. Its not about trying to get big. Also diet plays an important part. Limit fatty and acidic foods like dairy on race day and a day or two before.
A lot of it also about your focus on the track. When your in a pack racing a bunch of people you dont notice how tired you are compared to when your out there racing by yourself.
Other than that just ride as much as you can. If your races typically last for 10 min. then ride for 15 or 20 during practice. Nothing can substitute for riding.
Good luck. Hope this helps.

Im a 31 year old that just discovered the sport so dont feel bad. I did alright my first time out even looking loke a goof ball with the big tires and a tail light. I dont worry about being the fastest i just like to have fun. If someone comes up on my tail fast i just let them pass. I have learned that my quad corners alot faster when i am not coasting. Drive the corner deep, hard on the brakes and then power through it. When i coast it gets a little loose and i lose speed.

I'm gonna start riding again every day. I have a small track at home. No excuse to not be riding. I do need to pick up a quiet core for my pipe though so I can respect my neighbors. _specialED.gif

Yup. Your right Rob. I do need to get back in better shape. All summer I was climbing up and down 40ft ladders all day at work. I was in tip top shape. Then the rain came, work got slow and I started getting soft again. Doesn't take long.

Good tip. I think thats another mistake I'm making. I'm not hitting my brakes too much except right before a really tight turn. As for the tires? I generally ride XC/Woods and trails and I'm used to ridding on my 22's on the rear. At my first race, I went with my semi - bald Razr 20's. (money is very tight right now) thumbdown.gif Its hard enough to cough up the entry fee. Anyway, one of the guys I race commented on my "BIG" tires. They are all running 18's.

Ride the beginner class if you want. You're a beginner no matter how old you are. Around here the over 30 class is usually within a couple of seconds of the pro class lap time.

Cornering: Ass off the seat. if you are turning left then you're right butt cheek should be beside the seat. I see a lot of beginners with their butt on the seat and they just lean there head and shoulders.

Really good cornering video.

Alot of people dont use there front brake and clutch while corning... Use the fronts more than the rears...

Turning lean into it, just like said before, ass off the seat, on my old quad you could see the marks of where my but was on the bottom of my fender almost...

To get in shape, ride as much as possible, eat right, and like everyone else said, cardio...

Just go out there and have fun!
