Getting started is the hardest part. Once you do your first race, you will be addicted. The first thing you need to look into is some bumpers, nerf bars and a kill switch. Don't worry about engine mods at first, you need comfort. You will have to ride as hard as you can for 2 hours straight. That takes alot of endurance. Make sure you have a good helmet, goggles, gloves, boots, and a chest protector. You are going to take a beating, the more protected you are the better.
Seat time will help out. Try to ride as much as you can. Ride for a couple hours without stopping. Practice hill climbing, creek crossing, and riding in tight areas. Little stuff like going over logs and rocks will help you be a smoother rider. The better you know how your machine reacts, the better riding experience you will have.
XC racing is a great time and the other racers are great people. It is like a big family.

I am sure there are plenty of things I didn't cover, as you do races you will learn more about yourself and your machine.

If you are interested in doing some races in central Virginia, contact me. I race the Virginia XC Series and Hare Scrambles when I get a chance.

Yup. Ignore motor work. I did my first race last month and by the end my thumb wasn't strong enough to push the throttle all the way anyway. Steering stabilizer and skid plates are important then Id worry about suspension. Tires can be nice too. I run 22 rears and 23 fronts and I just rolled over spots that were giving a lot of other racers trouble. Especially as things got rutted out by the end.
