Got a problem, fellas. My back brake doesn't work on my 2006. The pedal is soft and goes down pretty much as far as you can push it. I bled the lines and made sure the fluid was full. After doing that they started to work slightly better, but very slightly. I'm at about a 1 or 2 out of 10. When I lay under it and somebody else pushes the pedal up and down I don't even see the calipers squeeze the rotor. Also, the pads look like they are actually sitiing on the rotor, but I don't think they are because it seems to run fine. The pads are good, rotor isn't warped and I adjusted the pedal up, but still nothing.

So, any ideas? I am not the most mechanicly inclined person on Earth, so if you have an idea or solution, please try to dumb it down.

Thanks a lot

ETA: One other thing, the parking brake doesn't work either, if that helps, although I assume that's because the calipers aren't moving.

The parking brake has nothing to do with the rear brakes however, it needs to be adjusted about as often as the oil. They suck. Sounds like you need to keep bleeding the system until it has pressure within the line. I would just keep bleeding the line out till it gets better. Might take a while but that's my best advice since there is no other adjustment that I know of.

Could it be something like the master cylinder has gone out? Or a blockage.sand somewhere in the system?

could be a master cylinder, or a brake line coming apart on the inside.

my guess would have to be air in the lines. start bleeding the hell out of it, a vacuume bleeder works the best.

keep bleeding

Alright, I bled and still nothing. I went and bought a vacuum bleeder and kept bleeding. It was squirting fluid out in a solid stream, I closed it and did it again. Did that several times, so i think (I think being important here) that there is no more air in the lines, but still no brakes. Well, I do have a tiny bit of braking, but hardly any. Any other ideas?

I was looking ral close at everything to see if there was a leak, something bent, etc. I noticed that the adjusting bolt on the caliper body was loose. Not the bolt, the bolt and the nut are tight, but if you grab the adjusting bolt you can wiggle the bolt/nut a little. Is that normal?

I also noticed that it looks like there is a little fluid leaking out of the bottom of the oil bolt on the caliper body, the bolt right behind the bleed valve. I could be wrong, it could just be fluid I spilled, but it definitely looks like a litte tiny bit of fluid coming out of a bad seal maybe. Could that have an effect? Or is it time to go to a mechanic?

Check that posible leak. If there are any leaks in the brake system, every time you release
the brake pressure, air will seep back in the system. Good luck.

I took that oil bolt off that holds the brake line on because it looked like there may be fluid leaking out of it, but there are only metal washers in there, not rubber. I cleaned it our thinking sand might have gotten in there, but since they are metal washers and not rubber, it doesn't seem like that would be leaking. Agreed?

Alternately, the hose that connects the fluid resovoir and the master cylinder is the newest thing I think mught be leaking. Had to order that, so we'll see if it helps. Thanks for all your help

The metal washer on the banjo bolt should be copper, no rubber.

It's not copper, it is just a regular old metal washer. At least that is how it looks. I have had the quad since it was brand new and I have never messed w/ it, a buddy had it for awhile but I doubt he would change those. Soooo, should I go get new washers or what?
zax450
the washers are probly made from aluminum (<--- spelling?)
either way, i would put new ones on just because your already there and they are cheap.

I know my brakes have probably been keeping you guys up at night worrying, but you can sleep now, I got them fixed. I replaced the hose from the resovoir to the master cylinder, the bleed screw and the washers on the oil bolt on top of the caliper. One of those fixed them, I am pretty sure it was the hose. It looked like it was leaking, so I am pretty sure that was what the problem was.
