I bought a used 06 TRX450ER and was getting ready to store it as I'm leaving town. I like running the gas out of my carb if I plan to let it sit for more than a couple of weeks. Anyways, I put the fuel valve to off and let it run for at least 5 minutes and it's still running. I just turned it off as it was late in the night. Before I pull the gas line out to see if the fuel valve is working properly, I thought I would ask if this is normal. How long do you have to run it to get the gas out of the carb in these? All my other bikes only take a few minutes.
Just being a little lazy this morning, I thought I would ask before I got my hands dirty.

Mine will run for quite a while if it's just idling. You can always just turn the little screw on the left side of the carb. It drains your float bowl out this is what i usually do.

I'm getting a slow dripping when the needle is on the off position. I am going to take it apart to see if I can find anything stuck. I might need a new valve.

I just did mine last night b/c I'm pretty sure I'm done riding until spring, and mine idled for over 5 minutes with the gas off too. It was late when I did mine as well and I was ready for bed so I just repeated revving it a little and letting off until it quit. I was also surprised that it idled that long with the gas turned off.

It's alot easier to just drain the bowl.

when i saw this thread a question poped into my head and didnt see it adressed anywhere. is it better to do what all of you are talking about, to drain the fuel and run it dry or to put a fuel stabalizer in the tank and let all the parts stay moisturized? does keeping the enigne dry really help it more than harm it?

Sea Foam and drain/run it dry here.

What is Sea Foam? i thought that was car polish/wax. So what's the consensus? Run it dry? Does that really dry out the seals and ruin them? Or leave it as is? Or will that clog it up? Or, add fuel stabilizer? Or is that bad for the engine later when you run it?

i use fuel stabilizer in the quad now, and i ve used it in my 2008 gsxr 600. every spring that i go to start the bike, it has started with no problem.
the only thing that you will experience with the stabilizer is that it will blow out osme black smoke until all of it is gone, its not a lot, but there will be a little. nothing to worry about though.
as for draining the carb, i just shut the valve off and let it idle, or hold the throttle open at maybe 25% and it dies with in a min or so, not 5 like others have said.

So talking about this fuel and clogging the carb i think mine has done exactly that. It had sat for a while and yesterday i went to start it up, it started ran ok for about 2 min, then died, went to start it and it did not start. Since it had been sitting for a while I didnt know how strong the battery would be so I decided to put it on a float charger over night and then start it today. Well it did not start again, long story short after process of elimination gas getting to carb, but will not drain out the float drain.
So I am thinking that something something is plugged in the carb. I have not torn apart one of these carbs yet, is it often the jets that will get plugged up? Or what usually is the cause? Also anyway to try to clean it out before taking it off the quad?

^^^Try this first...... tap the side of the carb with a screw driver handle. Sounds like the float needle is stuck stopping gas from pouring in the carb bowl.
