how much tranny fluid does the 04 trx take? and also what kind of tranny oil do you guys use/prefer?

I along with many, many others use the red bottle honda tranny fluid. I forget the exact amount of ounces, but pull the check bolt on the side of the case and fill it up slowly thru the fill hole until the fluid begins to run out the check bolt hole.

I use the red Honda bottle and I believe its close to .6 quarts. Like stated, fill to fluid runs out the check bolt hole.

if you are filling it too fast you will have way too much once it comes out the check hole....
always measure out what it says on the cover right by the tranny oil cap... i believe its something like 650 something ml, which is the same as cc's
so put that much in and let it settle....
if none comes out of the bolt then giver a lil squirt and your good to go....

Whats the red bottle? I just changed my fluid and the dealer told me to use 10-40SJ GN4 Honda oil. Shifts great! But is this not the correct stuff?

that 10-40 gn4 is fine but the red bottle is actual 2 stroke tranny gear oil like 90w
i think its a little better than the gn4 because thats what it was made for...
the guy at the dealer will tell you not to run it because its for 2 strokes but tell him about 10,000 people say otherwise! lol

the red bottle is 80w/85 weight hp trans oil for two strokes but i used it in my 05 450 and it shifts great

how often do you change the tranny oil?

I am having issues with the honda red, i switched from rotella and now my clutch is slipping and i have a complete hinson setup, im going back to rotella with a lockout clutch and never worry about it again.

i change mine 1 time to every 2 oil changes and i change my oil every 5 rides if i ride really hard

I didn't like the red bottle stuff was popping out of gear and hitting false neutrals so I tried out Redline shockproof oil thats made for these bikes and it fixed the issues I was having with the tranny that the dealer wouldn't fix because they kept saying they could find the problem but all they were doing is riding it in a tiny little parking lot that you can't even get it out of first gear in so of course they couldn't replicate the problem. Honda HP trans oil (red bottle).Used this trans oil since new in my 04,still running the stock clutch!!!

That's what I use. I know it is some great stuff, but still on the stock clutch, AMAZING......

Oh and just to add the red bottle the (HP TRANSMISSION OIL) the new bottle will actually include its for seprate cased transmissions which include trx450 crf450 crf250 and the crf150 i think.

At least honda caught up with themselves on that one lol
