Have never heard of it being done....or even attempted for that matter....my guess though is a good place to start would be with an XR400.....You'd probably need the parts from it and possible the right side case....I know the 400ex motors is designed from the XR400....however I know the tranny gears were beefed up which means the cases from the XR may not fit the EX.....good luck on yer journey

thanks for the advice, although im not starting a journey lol. i was just trying to decide weather i want to buy a 400ex or 450r. i have wanted a kick start for abotu 5 years now lol . the only thing is that where i rdie i wouldnt be able to use all of the 450s top end power. so i dont know if a 400ex would be better for me.
let me know

Ya im not a big fan of electric start myself.....however my friends who do own 400EX's dont seem to have any problems with starters....unlike the plague of E-start 450R faliures....I'd say if yer looking for a good trail bike, with nore power than an EX but easier to control than a 450...check out the Zuki LTZ400's or their cousins the Kawi KFX400 and the Artic Cat DVX400....all the same bike (Different plastic/lights) They would be an excellent choice for a trail machine with plenty of power on tap.

so you dont think that the 450r would be a good choice if i probably wouldnt ever see 5th lol, maybe once and a great while. But ive herd from people the 450's like to run almost like two strocks. To give you a little prospective, i most of the time use 4th gear on my 250ex, mainly cause 5th doesnt have any balls at all lol. i just feel like if i get a 400ex ill end up putting power upgrades in it anyways. i may be looking at this wrong but let me know what you think

I have got a 450r and i ride it in places that it doesnt see 5th gear most of the day. I still love it and wouldnt want any other quad. I also have a 400ex sitting in my building atm and it runs great in the woods. Just whatever you want to do, but i personally wouldnt want any other quad

In the 400ex section of atvriders, there was a guy who done the kick swap on the 400. Do a search there, and you'll find it. It was alot of work if I remember correctly.

get an 05 r and get a stage 1 cam for good low/mid range power.
I'd get an R oven a 400ex.
