I have read every oil thread but I still do not know if you can use oil with moly in the engine side. I know it cannot be used in the tranny. I have heard that it is fine to use in the motor because it is separated from the clutch but have also heard that the moly can leave deposits on the cylinder etc because it is a high performance motor.

I would like to run Mobil 1 synthetic oil in the engine. The automotive version with moly is very cheap. To buy the motorcycle version without moly is much more expensive.

Can anyone clear this up for me?

Thanks

just dont run moly in the tranny side and you will be fine. 15w40 rottella (white jug) is great for both sides.

That is what I always thought. More lubrication. I know cars love it. I know it would make a wet clutch slip which is why I never use it in my R1. I love the fact that they separated the motor and tranny oil on the 450R.

I read something on the net that said moly would mess it up because it is a single cylinder and puts more pressure on the piston and the moly would burn leaving deposits on the cylinder and head.

Did not sound right but just wanted to double check. Thanks again

the service manual says honda oil with moly protects better
i rode an 04 with MOBILE ONE for four years through lots of mud, sand, and water yes water i drounded it at least three times i can remember it took a bent shift fork and a hack mechanic to stop that quad
now i have an 08 450er i run honda oil with moly(probably should switch back to mobile 1). my friends both ride 06 450er's with AMSOIL and they tell me that a little puff of smoke is noticeable when i shift and that it smells like im burning oil but no mechanical problems yet i havent noticed any smoke or smells from their quads i usually ride the roads with the throttle pinned in fith gear for miles at a time

Moly is really good for the cam/lifter set up in these engines.

The more spring pressure, and the more radical cams the require them, the more Moly you want to have. If you have a local drag strip, chat a few guys up till you find a guy who is running a solid lifter cam set up and ask him what oil he or she runs, odds are it's going to be a "race only" oil with a ton of moly in it. You can't run these oils in a car with a O2 sensor or a cat on it, as the moly is very much bad for both of them.

The car I part time crew for runs the Valvoline version of this oil. We can't get it here, but it's rumored that Kendel oil is all so very high in moly.
