Well, we had planned on doing this last year, but just couldn't swing it with diesel being $5.00/gal. But this year, it's ON!! We thought about coming out the first week in June when the "Flatlanders" (a group of southern Indiana guys that head west every year) hit St. Anthony's this year, but scheduling problems left us with going the third week.
The dates have been locked in. Got solid commitments for at least 4 people, but might have as many as 6 total. We plan on heading out Friday afternoon/evening on June 12th and driving straight through. Should arrive late Saturday evening and be ready to ride Sunday the 14th!
The plan calls for hitting Little Sahara, UT. for 2-3 days and St. Anthony's, ID. for 3 days before heading home. It's basically 1600 miles 1-way to either place, with the majority of traveling on I-80. Once we get closer to the actual date is when we'll decide which Sandbox to hit first, based on what the weather looks like. It's roughly a 5 hr drive between the two.
Anyways, sounds like we'll be taking my '07 Crew Cab Duramax and 26' enclosed trailer. I'm trying to find a truck topper to maybe cut down some wind resistance on the trailer, plus I'll throw an air mattress in the bed so 1-2 guys can catch some zzzz's on the way out before taking their turn at the wheel.
Right now, the group consists of Chris (Sredrum) and his buddies Rick and Jason, and my buddy Ron (badass70 on the forum) and myself. Got another buddy who might fly out and join us for a couple of days also.
If anyone else would be interested in coming along or meeting up would be more than welcome!! It would be cool to hang out with some Utah/Idaho members if anyone's schedule permits!!

Thanks for the offer Millertime. Chris (Sredrum) and his buddy Rick went to St. Anthony last year, so luckily we will at least have someone along whose been there before. But you are more than welcome to come hang out and show us around!
As far as the jetting for me and my buddy Ron, we already have that covered. We'll be cheatin' on getting it dialed in. We're taking the Raptor 700's which we've installed the new Dynojet Power Commander 5's on.

Along with the Dynojet Auto-tune box (with 02 sensor) and our trusty laptop computer, we'll have the Rappy's dialed in with newly tuned fuel maps within a matter of minutes!!
We'll just have to wait on the rest of the boyz to finish swappin' brass before we head out exploring.

Yep, it's official. Derek (aka BigBlock10) is "IN"!!
So, after conferring with some of the Ohio boyz going with us, it looks like we will be taking 2 rigs out.
Here's the rundown so far:
1. Chris (Sredrum)
2. Rick
3. Jason
4. Ron (badass70)
5. Derek (BigBlock10)
6. Kris (NHRAdragracer)
7. Kyle (a buddy)- Tentative

9. Gary (556KingR)- Tentative
Trying to get Gary wound up enough to go, lol. Told him I'd beg and plead with his wife if need be! Hell, I told him if he came out to Venom this spring from Jersey to do some dyno testing, that he could leave his quad. Then, I'd transport the beast to and from Little Sahara/St. Anthony's, and all he'd have to do is jump on a plane from Jersey. He could always drive back to Venom later in the summer for another round of testing and pick it back up.
Come on Gar!! Don't be skeered!

Hey Ron
Your 700R looks great man! Very fast I'm sure!
Looks like more guys are going than what I thought. But thats a good thing. I can't wait. But got to get my bike running. Very soon now I think.
It's a two truck/trailer trip now. But I think my trailer is the same size as Kris's so it's good for around five quads.
Kris, maybe soon you or I should call that camp grounds (oasis) and get two spots side by side held for us. Don't think it's that busy @ St A's when were going but it's the safe play. The other option is staying @ the states site and ride to the oasis camp site to take showers. The state site doesn't have showers FYI. But the state camp grounds is closer to the big hills on the upside. Talk to you soon player

Have you guys figured out what weekend your going to be in Utah yet?
We're still working on that Kam, haven't made a decision yet on whether to go to Little Sahara or St. Anthony's first...
I actually spoke to Sredrum the other night and we were discussing this actually. Here's the dilemma we are having... I'd hate to drive all the way out there on a "set" schedule. Say we set it in stone that we're going to Little Sahara first, and it's raining for those first 3 days when it could be better weather at St. Anthonys during those days. Or, we go to Little Sahara first and it's nice, but the forecast shows rain for later in the week at St. Anthony's. At that point, I'd rather hit St. A's first before weather moves in, and then go down to LS the last half of the week.
I know that makes it difficult for the "local" Utah/Idaho guys to schedule days off unfortunately. But, we (us midwesterners) driving all that way might have to be alittle selfish and work around a schedule that benefits us first. Not trying to make it sound like it's all about "us", but personally I would hate to drive 3600 miles round trip to ride in the rain for 5 days...
Anyways, we will be talking about this more this week, and I'll be sure to post in here if we come up with a more stable itenerary, lol.
BTW Kam- I need to talk to you some more about camping/hotel options at LS. I'll try to get ahold of you sometime in the next couple of days. Trying to find out if there are any campgrounds at LS with shower facilities, etc. I think Sredrum is gonna reserve spots for us at a campground at St. A's that has shower facilities, but we're still up in the air for LS.
Sorry for the ramble, lol.

Makes perfect sense to me. It is all about you guys were out there all the time. You guys need to maximize your time there for sure. Its no trouble at all, Ill be there whenever it is.

Just thought I'd update this thread since it's getting closer, and we've pretty much decided on a plan...
We are gonna hit Little Sahara, UT. first for a couple of days, and then head up to St. Anthony's, ID. for the second half of the trip.
So, although the particulars are still getting ironed out, this is a pretty solid itinerary...
We'll be heading out towards Little Sahara Friday June 12th probably noonish/early afternoon. We are driving straight through, so we will be arriving in Utah sometime late Saturday afternoon/evening on June 13th. It sounds like Kam and the KBR crew will already be there with another group called the "Flatlanders" that are heading for home Sunday. Anyways, Kam said he plans on hanging around Sunday and Monday with us... So we'll be camping at LS Saturday, Sunday, and Monday night.
Tuesday June 16th will probably be our "flex" day. We'll either get up in the morning for another quick ride, or head north towards Idaho. It's about a 5 1/2 hour trip up there, and we might stop in Salt Lake City and hang out at KBR for a bit since it's on the way. Might also do some sightseeing if there is anything else of interest along the way.
Anyways, we'll probably arrive at the campground at St. Anthony's Tuesday early evening and set up camp. Will be staying there Tuesday night June 16th thru Friday night June 19th before heading for home Saturday morning on the 20th...
This should be a pretty solid scenario for anyone interested in joining us for a couple of days, etc. I would say the biggest thing still up in the air is the Tuesday-Wednesday time frame, in case we decide to stick around at LS for and extra 1/2 day or something, we might not arrive at St. A's until Wednesday morning...
Hope to see some locals if possible for all or part of our westward trip!!

2. Rick

John (Mixxer) will not be attending now due to being too darn busy! Personally, I think he's just skeered he'd get alcohol poisoning or something,
but that's just my opinion... ;>)
And Derek, I wish you were still able to go, but the joys of home ownership and the wonderful unforeseen expenses that go along with it have to take
precedence... Hey, does anyone want to donate to the Bigblock10 well pump fund or blown up lawnmower fund?? Seriously though, hopefully next year we'll be able to make the trip again, along with you man!!

Ill call you today, sorry I have had some very serious personal things come up in the last few days that have been tearing at me from all directions....
Anyhow I talked to Chris (sredrum) about all the above.
You guys want to stay at Sand Mountain, thats where we will be. As you pull in to the park you will see signs for all the diff sites in the area...
White sands, Jericho, Oasis, and finally Sand Mountain. Follow the signs. Its simple. Once you start getting close to the mountain (you cant miss it), you will have a left hand turn before anything lese (before the big brown brick bathrooms) and you take that left and it is the "east" loop. We will be there with a spot saved for you. Even if you miss that turn you will still be able to see or find us easliy. Its just a big ol sandy dirty parking lot with loops in it.
I probably not bringing the dyno, unless its absolutely needed. Its another truck Id have to drive.
See you soon, be careful boys!

Man, what a looonnnggg azz drive!!!! Got back home Sunday evening about 8pm. Logged over 3,800 miles round trip on my trusty '07 Duramax pulling a 26' enclosed trailer with 4 quads and an old school 250r 3-wheeler. Didn't have one hiccup with this setup! I wish Sredrum's crew could have reported the same.
I'll let him explain if he so desires, but long story short, after 2 blown trailer tires and a wild ride across the median into oncoming traffic on I-80, Sredrum's crew decided it wasn't in the cards to continue on the trip. I'm just glad no one got hurt!!
Anyways, my crew had a great time!! Met the KBR boyz at Little Sahara Sunday afternoon before they had to head for home. After a short thunderstorm, me, Ron, and Zac basically had the whole place to ourselves!! Nothing like sitting in the middle of the dunes with a couple of your buddies when you can't see or hear another soul.... That just doesn't, or better yet, can't happen in our normal little sandbox called Silver Lake.
After riding the rest of the day Sunday and Monday, we headed towards St. Anthony's, ID. Tuesday with a stop off at KBR's shop in Salt Lake City. What a class act operation they have there!! Kam and Marty went out of there way for KS3 Racing and willing to accomodate anything we needed. I kinda felt like a "King for a day" around there, lol.
We left KBR Tuesday around noon and arrived at St. Anthony's early evening. Headed out for a planned 15 minute ride just to check out the dunes Tuesday evening before it got dark and immediately got lost and couldn't find the entrance to the campground... Needless to say, I was ready for a beer about 1 1/2 hours later when we finally found our way back to camp.
Met alot of nice people over the next couple of days. There was a pretty big crew from Ohio camping next to us on one side. Went riding with another group of about 10 guys from Washington on Thursday. They sure know how to try and kill a old, fat, out of shape midwesterner on a trip out through the dunes!!! I finally get it now why you west coast duners like to have good aftermarket suspension... My basically stock suspension works alright on our small 15 minute trips around Silver Lake, but it is hugely insufficient for a real dune riding excursion... I thought my arms were gonna fall off by the time I got back to camp. All the way back I was trying to dream up ways that I was gonna have to hold my beer up to drink it, lol. Luckily my arms worked well enough to accomplish this task though!
Decided to leave alittle early for the drive home... Pulled out about 1 pm Friday and headed north towards I-90 to see some more of the country on the way back home. Went through Yellowstone National Park on the way. It's only a couple of hours from St. A's and on the way to I-90. Man is that place BIG!! Took us about 3 hours to navigate through it with a couple of stops for pix. Saw some buffalo and deer, but no bears darn it!! Also saw some hot springs and cruised by Old Faithful, although I was too darn tired to walk up the trail to actually see it.
Finally got out of the park and hooked back up with I-90. Drove through the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming where we hit 9600+ feet above sea level before decending down the eastern side. Still lots of snow along the road at that altitude! Then saw Devil's Tower, the mountain used in the filming of "Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind" for those who remember that movie, before entering South Dakota. Took forever to drive through SD before dropping down on I-29 and we called it a day close to Sioux City, Iowa Saturday night before hauling the mail home Sunday... Couldn't wait to get home and see the rug rats Sunday evening before they went to bed, especially since this was my first Father's Day! Mission accomplished!!!
I'll try and get some pictures and video posted up within a couple of days. We took over 300 digital pictures and filmed over 5 hours of footage on my Go-Pro helmet cam and about 5 hours on another cam also! Just gotta do some editing and sorting first.
Sorry for the length of the post. It's hard trying to fit a 10-day unforgettable experience into a few small paragraphs!!

I can't tell you how bad I feel not making it out west this year. But came real close to being killed on I 80. Don't care to go into the details but learned afew things and am making plans to go out there next year already. Next year I think the max that will be going on my side will be four guys. So Kris think about if your game to going out west again. The only thing that will keep me from going is if fuel is crazy expensive. Just have to see
