I just received my 14:1 Venom Piston and want to install it in my 07 450R but didn't get ring gap specs with the piston. Anybody know what they are? Also, how necessary is it to hone the cylinder?

I would just set em to 12-14 thousanths..... also it is only neccesary to hone the cylinder if your cross hatchings are good...... we can help more if you take a pic of the cylinder wall and post it.

I haven't taken it apart yet since I don't wanna start the install yet if its gonna take too long. President's Day is nearly here after all. Thanks for the quick response!!

i personally would still have it honed. my cross hatching looked good when i did mine but i still had it honed to deglaze the cylinder wall.

Manufacturers recommendations for the top ring are: bore size (in inches) X .005in
You should get a measurement of about .0188 assuming you have a 96mm piston

However, it is alright to run slightly tighter clearances such as charlie+450r said above ^^^

As far as the oil rings: anywhere between .015 and about .030 will be fine but do not go any smaller

Ok thanks for the info guys. I think I'm gonna go with the honing just to be safe.

this is from the piston info page on the Venom website, i should probably add that rings will definately NOT seat without fresh cylinder honing:

Piston to Cylinder wall on 100mm and less bore size with plated aluminum walls: 0.001"
Top Ring Gap: 0.012"- 0.016"
Oil Ring Gap: 0.015"- 0.025"
Valve to piston at TDC overlap: 0.060" Intake 0.080" Exhaust

Damn, that sucks. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to replace the rings if they don't seat. Thanks bro.

nitrided rings will never seat without a new or freshly honed cylinder...they are the hardest & longest wearing rings available
