Thanks in advance for your help!

I just bought a 04 R and it runs well with the choke on ( I did not know that off was down. The guy I bought it from told me that it runs only when its up)
Once I turn the choke off ( or down) it will run but I have to keep the throttle on. Once I let it go it dies. I have adjusted the pilot screw to the factory setting but it did not help. It starts fast but I really have to put all 220 pounds into it to get it cranked.
Thanks for looking and helping a newbie!

sounds like to me your pilot circut in your carb is clogged.Take the old gas out and clean all the jets in the carb.motion pro sells a nice tool kinda like a pipe cleaner to clean out the jets..As for your starting issues check your valves for spec and check your decompression..hope that helps.

Thanks Stoned, where do you get motion pro? Also, do I have to take the carb apart to clean the jets?

You need to take off the bowl to get to the pilot jet. You can get to the main jet through the 17mm bolt hole in the bottom of the bowl. Are there any add-ons to the bike or the air box lid off that it should be rejetted for? You should also definitely check the valve clearances and adjust the decompressor.

no mods, its all stock. I bought the TRX from a guy who did not know how to change the oil. May have been a bad decision but he was selling it cheap since it did not run well.

To take the bowl off, will I need to remove the carburetor? Thanks again and sorry for the elementary questions, I'm very new.

The easiest way to do it would be leave the carb on but that is prolly better for people who have seen the inside of a carb before..... if i were u i would jus take the carb off first.

Might want to check the valves... if the guy didnt know how to change oil later Ill bet he never got those adjusted

check the a/f screw its easiest to access when the carb is turned so the bowl faces the left side of the bike. the screw could be turned in too far should be 1 1/2 turns out (or so)

Ever thought about just trying to adjust your idle? Lol, i may sound retarded but when i swapped my cam in it only ran when my choke was out. Didn't when it was in. So i had to adjust my idle...

Mine would only run with the choke on after I put in a cam. Found out my timing was off a tooth. Might check that.
