i have my quad torn all the way down to the frame. im building it up into an xc quad so i can start racing this year. i just bought this quad but before i tore it down it would take 3 or 4 kicks to start. the top end turned out to be bad so im sure that had alot to do with it.
my goal obviously like all other xc racers is to get my quad to start first kick. so how do you guys do it.
whats your advise? what do you do to make your quad start first kick at the gate?

my first thought would be add an FCR if you do not have one that way you could pump the gas a little bit.

A properly tuned Quad will fire on the first kick every time. You just need to make sure the jetting is right along with the decompressor set correctly, the decompressor is very important.

i can tell you one thing from experience, you definatly do not win XC races on starts
the last 2 races i entered i started dead last in my group but won both of those races
starts really arent as important, xc races have alot to do with balls, if you got the balls to keep the throttle pinned on a tight asss road built for 2 wheelers win all you can see is your handlebars because of the dust, thats how you win a xc race

nice, i like that explination.
yeah i have plenty of balls lol. some call it borderline stupidity. i always have to be the first to try the impossible.
im not expecting to go out and win all my races right away. i am just looking for some better competition when i ride. i am very competitive in nature and i am always wanting to race my riding buddies. but i always win, no question. so i figured i would really enjoy racing.
thanks for all the help

You can have a horrible start and still do good in the long run, just remember that patience is key to an XC race. Many push as hard as they can that first lap, just to find out they used everything they had at the beginning...You have to run YOUR race! When first starting to run XC races, find your pace....Make sure you have enough for the end of the race.
Having the carb fine tuned does help for a quick start, it was most likely your head as you said. Find out how your quad starts, take some time to work on your dead engine starts. This is my 3rd year racing and just last week I went out and practiced my holeshot, I had told myself I knew how to start the thing and I let it get away from me....I had 2 bad starts back to back, running A class that wasn't good. I had to take myself back to the basics of starting the race again...It has worked! Just practice, it helps

In a dusty or muddy race the start can be a big deal though.... It is hard to chatch folks or pass them if you can't see.
Like they said above, once you get it starting just get yourself a system and do that every time. Maybe find someone that is good at it and ask them for tips.
It's funny, in 04 we went with a yfz over the R because of the e-start then three years later when I retired the yfz I got a smoking deal on an 05 R that our sponser still had in the crate, and my son has managed to get the holeshot most of the time on it.

thanks for the help
i have noticed alot of people saying a good tuned kicker starts up faster then an e-start. hope this turns out to be ture for me as well. that was the biggest negitive thing about the 450, but i got it anyways

The Magic Button is nice, but I will take my kicker any day. My battery never dies. LOL

No not if it's done correctly. Also the start isn't as important in XC...but do you really want to be playing catch-up or would you rather people be chasing you. It helps with your moral and focus to have a good start. It also helps because your out in front and if there is a bad pile up or hold up in a tight trail...your not stuck behind it. Our team runs Dual batts and a kicker just in case. A good tuned kicker WILL start faster then a regular E-start. But it's really all about fine tuning the low-end of your Carb. To rich is a slower start.
