Full Version: Best Pipe for XC?

I have a stock '07 450ER. What are you guys running for XC pipes? I was thinking about a DASA or Rossier, but I dont wanna have to worry about sound checks so I been thinking about a Venom pipe. Any recommendations?
fourfiftyare
I have personaly never used a venom pipe, but i would give them a try if you are concerned about sound. I tried my rossier with supertrapp disks and i didnt like the loss of low end power racing motocross, when you are tired and comming out of a corner you dont really want to downshift just hammer down and have the power there. I have heard bad about the dasa quiet core, i think (no bashing) lol, so it looks like you should be givin Venom a try
Mikey
Yeah, Im lookin for bottom end power. Heres a video of a Venom pipe.

Mikey just get a HMF slipon and call it good. Untill you spend money the head dont worrie about the rest.

^^^^^ Yeah I run an HMF system and love the bottom end. All I do is XC.
jshtex
We race XC and we have a 101db limit....

We used to run an HMF slip-on but it was too loud without the quiet core. With the quiet core it would pass but I was concerned about being down on power. I bought a Venom and it passed and seemed like it had plenty of power. But in our last race the Venom got crushed so I am going back to the HMF for the final race for this season. I will make a decision about a new pipe for next year later.

i HIGHLY reccommend the Rossier with the supertrapp endcap, tuneable with the discs so if your to loud at sound check, no worry just pull a couple discs out and try again!! and if there is no sound check the regular endcap on there

i reccomend getting the rossier just plain from rossier with the regular exhaust tip and then buying the supertrapp endcap setup from summit racing i got the whole supertrapp endcap with bolts for 66 bucks shipped, because if you order the sup[ertrapp endcap with the rossier, from rossier youdont get the regular tip i dont believe

i have the part #'s for the supertrapp from summit if you need them

Cool. Thanks for the info Rick.

I personally like my Venom pipe on my yfz. I would not worry about being sound tested(never have been tested) plenty quiet, and great all around power.
Mikey
This is hard. So many choices and pipes arent cheap. It was DASA for long time. Then it was LRD which really sounds bad ass when it echos through the woods here in The Pacific Northwest, then it went to Venom, Rob got me thinking HMF, then yesterday I was listening to Rossier sound clips and likin them, then someone posted a clip for the new HMF Quiet Series. Im sooooooo confused. banghead.gif I love the loud pipes, but sound checks worry me, allthough I never see anyone get checked and hear other bikes I know wouldnt pass still out there. Plus, Im a recreational rider and will only do a couple races per year.

If you are worried about sound then look elsewhere ... The Dasa is WAY too loud, the HMF is WAY too loud and the ROSSIER is too loud ... All these pipes have ways to get around that and i KNOW FOR A FACT with the HMF and ROSSIER when you add the Quiet core to the HMF or the Supertrap to the Rossier you will come into a LOT of heat issues with your exhaust system ... i just run mine WIDE OPEN until someone tells me not too ... Then i look into the HRC Set up that i still have for "SPECIAL OCCASIONS" ... with your Area of riding in the woods up there i would look into the HMF QRS ... it is designed a little different to help with the heat but not a LOT of difference ... You will still have a heat issue ... Blocking up an exhaust is always a risk ...

HRC header and the E2 from White Brothers.

I have the Aluminum Pro 2. Its nice, big boost in low/mid seat of the pants feel. Loud though.

I had the Aluminum Pro on my 05. Nice pipe, but I thought White Bros went outta business or something?
Mikey
I like loud pipes. The more videos I watch Im starting to think a loud pipe wont be a problem. I think I will just carry a quiet core in the truck and if somebody says something I can put it on.
Mikey
No longer worried about quiet. I want bottom end power and a deep throaty sound. I really like the way LRD and DASA sounds.

yes they did and V&H only carried over a handful of their pipes so parts availibility is a problem

I've got a LRD pipe on my 06. It came with the quad when I bought it. I'm going to start with it on my build that is in progress right now and see how things go. Several of the people here on this forum don't like LRD pipes and say they are power robbers, I haven't got to test and prove or disprove this yet. That is coming from at least one person smarter than me though, so I'm not going to say that person in particular is wrong.

My last trip to the dunes, I had a HC2, LRD Exhaust, and Pro Design intake, and I was quite impressed with how my quad ran. In the drags I was outrunning a YFZ with a high comp piston, cam mod, and a full FMF exhaust, and another buddy's KFX450 that has a programmer, Dasa Exhaust, and some variety of cam swap. So, I'm not sure that i'm giving up anything with the LRD. I guess the only way i'll know is to buy a Rossier or a Dasa and see how things stack up on the dyno. I have a feeling all I'm going to gain is some overrev power, which doesn't mean much to me since my whole build is geared around the 3k to 9k rpm range.

Anyhow, If I do some pipe testing I'll post the results. However if my current, in progress build makes over 50hp before I have the head ported, and does so in the RPM range mentioned above, I really doubt I'll spend the money on another pipe.

Thanks for the info. Im still likin LRD. Saw a chick yesterday at the track with an LRD on her YFZ. Sounded good. Course I kept focusing more on her than the bike. She could ride and she was smokin hot. Its a total turn on to see a chick ride like that. Anyway, I keep cruising the web looking at pipes. I really dont know much about pipes or what Im lookin at. When these pipes say "forestry approved" does that mean they have a spark arrestor? I have never been checked for sound, but have seen them check for spark arrestors. Most of the events Ive been to they were checking. (I do a lotta poker runs) Im looking at HMF trying to figure the difference between Sport, Balance and Iron Man. Then I noticed it said Carbon Fiber available on '06 and up. Would that help on heat issues? Then theres the torque modifier. Still dont understand what it does, but I like the sound of it. Torque modifier. Heres the YFZ chick with the LRD pipe.

HMF Sport series is an all around pipe...Ballance series is a midrange pipe, and Ironman is a upper rpm range pipe.

Just did that run of reading on HMF's forums.

For XC I would think that the Ballance series would be the preferred pipe out of the HMF Lineup.

I definitely like the sound of my LRD, just gotta see what it is or isn't giving up on power when I get things put back together. I'd love to find someone in my area with a DASA or Rossier that was willing to take part in some testing. I'd definitely be willing to donate my LRD setup to the testing.

I have a nice lrd you can purchase from me thumbup.gif

Anybody running The Bill Ballance HMF? Im thinking that would be a good bottom end pipe for trail riding. Also, if it says "forestry approved" does that mean it has a spark arrestor?
Kip
Forestry Apporved means it has a Spark Arrestor.

Mike, I would just get a HRC header and a HMF slipon.

You could stop by sometime and throw mine on yours and see if you like the power..... The jetting would be off, but you could keep your lid on and it wouldnt bee too far off.

i have the hrc head pipe and a white brothers e2 and it works great with lots of bottom end and a great sound. White brothers was just bought out by Vance and Hines so you can still get the e2 pipe

I wouldn't buy another exhaust. Most people who own and run a LRD praises them. I for one love my LRD exhaust.
Mikey
I never did do exaust yet. I like the LRD pipes too.

i've always liked the sparks pipe...i've used them for cross country and tt....love the power and especially the sound..not the price tho..lol
