Like it says I will be enetreing my first XC race next weekend here in TX. I have an 06 450ER. When starting the quad it takes a few seconds for the quad to start. After watching some of the race videos, if it take 2-3 seconds to start your quad you will be dead last at the first corner.
Does anyone have any tricks to get the ER to fire quicker, or am I SOL?
Thanks.

Everyone is in the same boat you are so you have nothing to worry about. The kicker guys will get a good start generally if there quad is tuned right. If this is your first don't worry about the start. XC races are not won in the start. You need to pace yourself for the 1 1/2- 2 hours you are racing. Go out and have fun. XC racing is a blast. Are you racing ATVCCs?

I agreaa 100% with this statment, XC races are not won on the start, but i also have to disagree and say if you do get a good start, theres alot less crap you have to deal with which will inturn allow you to pace yourself better. Bottlenecks in particular
Get the decomp set aroun 60-62 psi, proper jetting and hope for the best

Thanks for the input. Yes I am racing the ATVCCS series. Just going to make the last couple of races this season, then pick it up next year for the whole season hopefully.
I did set the decomp at 65 psi. Its jetted pretty good, so I guess that is as good as it will get. I raced MX bikes 10 years ago and that start was really important, but the race wasnt 1.5 hours. I will just get out as fast as i can and find a good pace.
Its going to be a blast and I cant wait to get out there.
Thanks

I am assuming that you are running our ATVCCS race? One race and you will be hooked, lots of fun and good people.
Pretty much everything they (both) said above is true. The start isn't that big a deal, especially in your first race. It is a little more important if your racing in mud or dust and then only because you might have a little while to ride when you can still see easier.
Look forward to meeting you! My son races in Open A, he rides a white honda with #122 on it. Normally we get there around noon on Saturday and then leave after the races on Sunday. But there is a chance we might not show up at this one untill early on Sunday.
Have you decided on a class?

Great news.
I am racing in the Open B class. I figure that would be a good place to start. I just want to go out and see where I fit in. Looks like alot of fun and I cant wait to do it. I am bring two others with me and they are racing in the Open B class as well. One of the guys used to race in the A class, but he has been out of it for a few years now.
We figure we would all start in B.
My name is Brian and I will be #191. I ride a black Honda 450. We will be arriving on Saturday afternoon. We hope to get a couple of test laps in on Saturday before the Race Sunday morning.
Look forward to meeting you and others.

They are having a buddy race on Saturday that you might be interested in. The way it works is, one rider does one lap and then you switch out every lap after that for a total of 4 laps (two each). The only downside is that it costs $20 per rider to enter. But it usually is a lot of fun.
The track will be open for practice all morning saturday and then if the pee wee track doesn't overlap the big track you can actually practice on the big track untill they start getting ready for the C Class races (Saturday Races around 2:00 pm). Then once the C class is done the track opens back up, I think untill dark.
Like they said the key is to pace yourself. It's not about how fast you can go, but how long you can go fast. We see MX guys show up with built to the hilt quads and they will usually run real fast for two, maybe three laps and then start falling off because they are used to going all out for a 20 minute moto.
Normally I travel with a buddy that has a tan F250 and we pull a toybox trailer. He races in the 50+ class on Satuday on a KTM number 185 and we usually park next to David and Gayle (the promotors) somwhere around the scoring shoot. You can't miss me I will be the big fat guy hainging around all the racers...
Like I said if you have any questions look us up, but really everyone is willing to help.

I might have to look into making that one. I will be down in Palmer, TX this weekend wouldnt' be to much out of my way to come over to Cash on Sunday. I haven't raced with the Texas guys but here it is a good group.

Come on! We have ran a couple of OCCRA events and it is pretty much the same kind of atmosphere, well except there are not bike guys around complaining about us trashing their track. This track (Caddo Point MX) has hosted a couple of 12 hour races and I know some of the OCCRA folks have ran them so there are probably folks up there that can tell you about the layout. It is pretty wide open and it incorporates some of the MX track. You even have an option of crossing over some bleachers with telephone poles laying on them to save some time.
The last race I was at up there was Talahina, man I wish that was still going on, very cool.

I raced the 12 hour down there. I wondered if this was at the same place or not. Are you guys getting this rain. That place was worse than ice during the 12 hour when the water came out of those creeks. I will see if I can't get my wife talked into heading that way on our way back to Oklahoma. I know a couple of the guys that have been coming down and running some of the ATVCCS races and they all say it is a good time. I will let you know if I can talk her into it.

Well I made it to the race. We actually went down on Saturday and stayed the night. Our raced started at 9am on Sunday. There was a total of 8 riders in my particular class. When the green flag went up I started my quad then stalled it.

..lol
Luckily it fired up pretty easy after the stall and I was on my way. I was in 7th place off of the start. I ended up passing one guy before we made it to the woods. By the end of the first lap I was sitting in 4th. I was in 4th for most of the second lap, then I passed to take over 3rd. I stayed in 3rd for the remainder of the race. I ended up making four laps within the hour time limit. I finished about 1.5 minutes behind the leader.
I thought for my first race I did pretty well. I had a lot of fun and the poeple are really nice. I am going to another ATVCCS race next month. David who is the organizer is a super guy and really takes pride in the series and insures everything is in order. It was a well run event in my opinion.
Also watching the pro class run on Sunday was a treat. I dont think they know where the brakes are! They fly across obstacles and do things you dont think is possible. Those guys/gals are awesome.
Thanks again,
Brian

Well, I spent this race at home.... My son is part of the FSAE race car team at UT Arlington and they asked him to drive in an SCCA event last weekend. So even though it might end up costing him the Open A points championship he did that instead. It sounds like you had fun and thats what it is all about.
You can find the lap times and results on the ATVCCS website. There is also a story about the race posted and it happens to include the B classes so you might be in there.
Is this you?

It looks like you got 6th overall in the B program, thats great first race or not.

Glad to hear you did well and had fun. 6th in the overall is excellent for any race. Keep up the good work and hopefully I can get down to an ATVCCS race one of these days to meet you guys.

Yes I want to make the Red River race on the 9th, but the kiddos B-Days are the same weekend so I will be with the family. I will be at the Nov 30th race at Lilly Creek however.
Thanks for the heads up though!
