well this bike was having starting issues for awhile now
we tried EVERYTHING....2 new battery, new starter,i shimed it everyway i could....loose,tight,extra tight, extra loose, and still it would turn over like the battery was low......well today i tried pulling the exhaust HOT-CAM out and i put the stocker back in.....AND IT FIRED RIGHT UP NO PROBLEM
it starts EVERYTIME now with just the tap of the button.........so now im trying to find out why the HC won't start the bike....is there a problem with these cams that anyone know of ?
the cam looks find, but there is definitly something wrong with it

my neighbor didn't have the hot cam but he did the cam mod to his yfz...and it wouldn't start either .............be finaly got it to start, with a bump start and it ran for like 20 seconds and sounded like crap. then it turned off....so we took the cam out and undid the mod and it started and ran like normal

well you can not do the cammod to the HC,its already built in there
i think there's a decompression problem with this cam.

BUCK...
the problem is in the decompression pins...they make 1.6mm decomp pins for dirtbikes and 1.0mm decomp pins for quads...
...quads starters turn around 350 or so rpms...and a dirtbikes kicker is closer to 600 rpms...if you have the wrong pin in for the application then too much cylinder pressure is bleeding off and you will not get a fire without pull starting it...
food for thought...measure the pin and you should know for sure

Hot Cam advises the use of their YZ hot cam exhaust in the yfz that uses high compression and or BB/ Strokers. You can send them the cam and they will either fix it, or replace it. Pretty common problem with the them for yfz.

you mean not enough ?
it was turning like it had no decompression at all........like the starter was binding
he can't remember where he bought the cam,so i told him to send it to hotrod and see what they say.

I had a major issue with a hot cam intake cam that was advanced 2 teeth. it caused me major, major headaches. i contacted Steve Beaver at Hot cams (515-402-8000) and he and others there helped resolve my issue. They sent me a new cam ( i bought the bad one on ebay, mistake) anyway they did well by me. i had some damage to my head due to them missing the problem on their first inspection of it and they ended up compensating me with product to help offset my losses. long story short they seem to do well on customer service.

No worries now. You will know right away first time trying to start it after installing the hot cam exhaust. It won't start, and it will turn over very slowly. If it starts then your golden.

is it worth even running the EXHAUST HOT CAM or will the stock EXHAUST CAM in the cam mod timing work just as well??

I'll look for the thread and link it here. He tested just the HC intake against a set of Ron Woods cams and the RW cams had a little more top end then just the HC intake w/ oem cam cam modded, then tested both the HC in and ex cams against the RW and had the same power with both.
But I'll look for it.

First page show the graphs of the RW vs. HC intake only.... RW has more top end.
http://www.trx450r.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=51508And here is his graph of both Hot Cams and the Ron Woods cams

thanks man
looks like on the yfz buying cams is NOT a must DO.....like it is with the trx
the web looks like its not even worth the money or time it takes to change them out.

That is correct. With the yfz cams are just about the last thing to do on the motor. Especially for any type of mx style racing... the stock cams cam modded works best for all around power.
