How many of you guys are running twist throttles when you race? I had one on a bike a couple years ago and i liked it but everyone else hated it. But i did use to ride dirtbikes so thats why i think i liked it.
Just is it better to race with twist or thumb? I like both evenly.

I've had thumb, and i've had twist. I dont really care for thumb until it comes to the technical stuff. Love twist for EVERYTHING else. Only one product I can honestly suggest to you...
Terrycable Dual Gasser. Its the thumb and twist combo, great product! I race with that now and its like heaven being able to switch back and fourth.

i dont like the twist mainly cause it feels like your hand is always gonna fall off. i just dont like them. also i like to stand up a lot and it feels really weird

I run my 250r with twist just because I was able to find some 1/4 turn wide open throttle but I havn't found one for the 450. I like them both but the they both have draw backs. I like the twist for wide open and the thumb for technical. If I could find a 1/4 turn for the 450 I would probably switch.
How hard is it to switch back and forth between the thumb and twist on your throttle during a race?

Easy. The twist on it is a 1/4 turn too, I believe.

They're $120 on ebay new. But it was WELL worth the price. And I dont know much about the moose but it looks to be the SAME exact thing. But in an issue of QUAD magazine they said that both the thumb and twist were really stiff on it. So go with terrycable if you do it. lol =)

Motion Pro makes one. I have a 1/4 turn on both of my 450R's. I am not sure of the model (I think it is the vortex, not positive on that.), but you can get the 1/4 turn.
The entire twist vs thumb debate is basically rider preference. Some people swear by one and hate the other. Use what ever you feel comfortable with.

Like I said. I havent seen the moose personaly so I dont know what its deal is but I have no problem with the terrycable. Seems easy enough to pull for me! I raced a 90 mile race with it and still had no arm pump or cramping.

yeah i herd the moose are really stiff. I think im just going to buy a cheap twister. If i have some extra cash after rebuilding the engine.

I never rode dirtbikes but i do like twist throttles. Had a cr pro on my 426ex for a while and liked it once i got used to it. I would like to get a vortex for my 450r. Has anyone used the streamline twist?

I use to have a Motion Pro on my old Z400. I liked it because it was comfortable and smooth. The only thing i didnt like was it became annoying when making hard turns. The serious leans you make back and forth on a quad that you dont make on a bike caused me some discomfort. I like both though!

does the CRF twist unit have provision for the throttle switch? (two wires going from the thumb unit to the carb mechanism on my 06 450ER) if not, how do you defeat this system?

The CRF housing does not have the provision. I cut off the harness and soldered the wires together. It's a normally open switch that is closed by the throttle mechanism. So at no throttle, the switch is closed allowing the bike to start.
I had mine on the bike for all of 20 minutes. On landing on the rear tires resulted in the throttle getting snapped open even further and it turned ugly quick. Back to the thumb throttle for me.

thanks for the info, much appreciated!
im strictly a trail rider and run with a lot of guys on 4x4 quads in real rocky trails. so i tend to hang on for dear life and get a ton of ache in my right hand. of my 5 fingers, the thumb is given up for the throttle and the index for the brake lever, so it leaves my weakest 3 fingers to hang on.
is the CRF a 1/4 turn, 1/2 turn etc?

I started riding dirt bikes when I was 7... I'm 30 now and I ride street bikes too. I put a twist on my last quad thinking I would like it because of dirt bikes and street bikes. I hated it from the get go. I thought I would get used to it but ended taking it off after 3 rides...
I think the weight of the quad effects throttle control with a twist. Cornering was odd and whoop sections were all "burpy" and it would toss my rhythm. On a dirt bike your riding posture is more upright and the bike is lighter so I think you are less likely to "goose" it by accident...

^^^^^x2. I just took the one back off my quad I had on there for only one ride. Just wasn't for me, too weird. I kept overgassing it and couldn't get used to it. But hey, I didn't know until I tried.

I have the moose version of the dual gasser. It works great for me just because usually halfway through my XC races my thumb wears out. So i just pull the pin and im good to go. I also drilled a hole through the pin and attached a loop of fishing liter. It makes it way easier to pull on the go. As for stiffness, ive never felt a terry dual gasser, but the moose version doesnt seem that stiff to me.
