Full Version: Header Wrap on 2 Stroke Exhausts?

I know this may be a stupid question but is there any negative to putting header wrap on a 2-stroke pipe. My dad has a 96 polaris Sport 400L and i bought him a FMF Gnarly expansion chamber with a FMF Powercore 2 silencer to replace the crappy stock pipe. The quad makes a ton more power but the pipe makes the stock heatshield get too hot to put your leg on, and if you have ever sit on a polaris Sport and a Scrambler, you know you pretty much have to put your leg against the heat shield. I dont have any problems with my 400 scrambler with the same set up but the shield seems to stick out farther, so i figured header wrap should help. What do you guys think?

I know some of you guys used to run the 2-strokers, did you see anyone do this or is it a big no no.

it would take alot more header wrap than it would if you were wrapping a four stroke header. hondaman bought a 50' (i think) roll and wrapped his header and mine too, and had a little left, so a long roll would be your best bet

anyone else have any input or should i just go for it.

zippy try putting reflective tape on the fender part to see if that helps like the 450rs have on the rear fender.

it already has that on the underside of the heatshield and it is still too hot! but the pipe is only about an 1/8" away from the shield.

It should be fine! The two stroke pipe works just like a four banger. It may be hard to get the wrap to stay on a two stroke pipe due to the rapid angles of the pipe. Maybe some big hose clamps and a lot of wrap. I have never ever seen a two stroke with header wrap but im sure it can be done and who knows....it may make some more power?

i will give it a shot, the only good thing about this pipe is it really doesn't have any wierd angles, the picture of the pipe is below. I think the headwrap will stay on fine, i will buy some big hose clamps to put on the widest part of the pipe and a few others just to make sure it stays. do you think 1" 50 foot roll will cover it?

not yet, i didn't even think about calling them tell you just mentioned it. I was worried about changing the "Power band" of the motor due to holding the heat and sound in. I am not to worried about changing when the power comes in though, this pipe was a improvement threwout the RPM range due to these motors not really having a power band and being an automatic trans quad. I will try giving them a call, I just figured someone had tried this before on something 2 stroke.

Good choice. Never would have thought of that.
