I installed my HRC kit this weekend and did a little write up this morning covering it. Please read and critique...let me know what is not clear and I will make changes as needed.

The write up to me seems pretty easy to follow...I think anyone should be able to do it with this paper and the service manual...well, a few tools too.

Anyway, can't figure out a good way to post so you will have to go to this link and download the .doc...not for those on dial up...it is 7.2 MB.

Let me know what you think...

Check this out guys, this is a nice write-up. I will add it to the FAQ soon also.

is there any way you make make it look like on just one page instead of in a chat format if you know what I'm saying...It would make it look alot better.

Ugh...I tried that. Saved it as HTML...looks great on my pc but when I post the pics are gone! Tried to save it as an XML and the same thing...

Lukester can you post it somehow?

I will get with the web guys tomorrow and ask one of them for help...I work in web infrastructure so we support the middle tier...but the Front end stuff is not for me!

Don't know why you could not download...you should be able to. I went out to it earlier and I think it was being hit because it was real SSLLLOOOOWWWWW....so I gave up on it but it worked fine a bit ago...
lukester720
What have you done to it, now I can't view it either. :( It says page cannot be displayed.

I was able to get in but not all pics loaded up so I copied it and pasted it to word but not all pics came over.

It looks to be like a A+ document. Took you a while to get this done. Would it be possible to get it emailed? I just picked up my HRC kit last night and Im gonna do it myself after this weekend.

If it can be emailed can you email me at ruizg75@hotmail.com ?

thanks

What is the limit on a Hotmail account? The file is 7.2MB and I do not think hotmail will allow it...here is what I have done...

I have purchased a domain and a web hosting site...I am currently waiting on the name to be registered in DNS (4-6 hours) and then I will upload the file there. There is a 200GB view/day but I do not think we will go over that. The file should be there later today or tonight and tomorrow morning at the very latest...I will post here when it is done.

Hotmail just up'd the sending limit a little while ago. For everyone i believe its over 10MB, plus you get a account size of 200MB now.

That is a fantastic document, if I had that, I would have installed the cam myself instead of sending it out to be done.

Thanks for the effort OK.

I agree with the rest of you. That is a great write up.

I like the last few lines too haha :D
UFOmile450r
Awnsome text man! I'm going to buy the HRC kit soon and was thinking of paying the dealership to do it, not anymore more! But if i do change my mind, wich i probably wont, ill bring them this document, make sure they do it right tongue.gif . Well, anyways, thanks for the awnsome document!

Great write up, you should model tools for craftsman!
MudGopher
Awesome write up! I'm going to need this real soon!

I know lots of you know this already, but for those that don't: You will thank yourself later if you replace the soft brass screws on the carb with pan head allen screws of the same size and thread angle. I've done this on both my quads. It really sucks tring to get a screw loosened that you have accidentally stripped.
oldfourstroke
:D Dat man got skills! I can not read but with that photography work I should be able to get it done. We all thank you for the great work and the time you spend helping the rest of us. What kind of torque wrench do you use? I need to replace my old craftsman because it looks as old as I am. Are there any other tools that will help make it easier? Thanks again for the write up and I hope you post it on other 450R sites so that fellow R riders can benefit from your great work.

I just finished installing the hrc kit using the HOW TO and it went real smooth , but the only question I have is how do you adjust the timing chain tensioner ? Do you turn the screw so it has more tension on the chain or just let it free ride spring tension only where the screw springs back & fourth ?

THE BIKE STARTED FIRST KICK AND I CANNOT BELIEVE THE DIFFERENCE IN THE SOUND ( USING BIG GUN PIPE WITH STOCK CAM & HRC CAM ) & THROTTLE RESPONSE AWSOME CANNOT WAIT TILL PRES. WEEKEND AT GLAMIS

THANKS AGAIN FOR THE INSTALL PICS !!!
OKTRX450R
You just let the spring hold the tension...does not seem like much so after my install I called the local dealer and they said the same thing...makes sense, that is all that is holding it when you start the install...

I use a Craftsman Torque Wrench too...

Glad you guys were able to use the How To and be successful.

By the way, we have an 8 year old, 6 year old, and 12 week old dauthers...it has been pointed out to me that it reads 8 week, 6 week, and 12 week old. Every one was thinking my wife was wonderwoman!!!

For someone who knows nothing about the 450r except from what I have learned from this forum, do you think that I would have any problems installing the kit myself by following this guide? Looks to be easy enough - very straight forward guide. Great job!
29FTEX
With the Service Manual as a back up, the right tools, and some mechanical aptitude, I think it's possible.
OKTRX450R
I would agree...make sure you have the service manual before you start. Make sure you have the feeler gauges, shims for the valves, and torque wrench...plus basic tools. I had never torn into my R before I did my HRC kit...I had not even worked on an ATV in over 7 years...plus, you can PM me and I can give you my phone number in case you run into any problems...also during the install if you run into problems you can post and usually have an answer within 20-30min. If you read the install I even called King during mine!
remmy
All right! Thanks alot - I will definitely purchase the service manual since I cannot seem to find the pdf version on the web wink.gif Thanks guys!
Black Thunder
I had previously installed all the components of the HRC kit except the cam. I had read through your entire assembly before ( glad I did) now it seems that it no longer wants to show up. I have the service manual and have everything apart I was just wondering if there was a different link or something. Just thought I'd ask because when I did read it I thought it was excellent with the pictures and all the info. Thanks.
Xjman1
Had a succesful install today, however I am wondering if I had it at TDC? After removing the crank cover, I saw a small punched hole on the gear and assumed TDC as the upper cam chain marks lined up as well. What makes me wonder now is that the lobes on your cam are pointing towards the rear and mine were pointing forward.
Either way started right up and sounds good. I am thinking everything went in as it came out so I should be fine. Any concerns you fellas think may come up or should go back in? Any one have pictures of the marks on the cam gear that should align?
racer69
that was some good reading...this is my first uni-cam quad and 2nd 4stroke..makes me want to go and tear down my engine..lol

Excellent write up, (I hope) I am about to do my jetting and cam on my 05 450r next week. Just waitnig for the parts. This should help alot.
Do the valve shims want to move easily when taking the cam out if I'm careful? Do you think I will need new shims when putting in a stage 2 hot cam? I am putting on an Alba pipe which comes with it's own jets will these work when I'm replacing the cam also?
I'll let you know how your write up helps. Thanks,

OKTRX, will i need a shim kit to install the hrc cam? or do i leave the stock shimms in there?

what about the hrc needle does that needle in particular need to be used?
what are the chances of the that cam running well with my current jetting?

I can not say you will need the shim kit...but the odds are likely you will need to re-shim. If you use shims from a dealer or from the Hot Cams shim kit it is up to you...personally I would recommend the HC kit. All the shims are there and readily available...plus, as your R wears you will need to re-shim in the future. Up to you.

Once again the HRC needle does not have to be used, it has solved many jetting problems for other folks...I have heard of several running the dynojet kit and reporting good results...also many were never able to get their R dialed in with the DJ kit and went to the HRC needle and factory jets and all their problems were solved. Personally I would recommend the HRC needle.

Personally I think the cam would be fine with your current jetting...here are my thoughts I can not see it making much difference...seems to me jetting is determined by air intake and exhause evacuation...I can see how larger lifts could create a small difference but nothing really measureable...unless you are talking about some mega lift/duration cam...then, I could see some difference possible.

Edit, asked a couple other .orgers and they pretty much agreed on the cam and jetting.
