one thing i have noticed when people buy a new R for normal trail riding is that they don't like the gearing. So everyone tells them to go buy a 13T sproket and add a pipe and so on. well i did all that stuff and even used a 13/39 gearing. well i kept looking for something to give me that lowend push with out using all that gearing. it was great in the tight trails but horrible in long drags. a two wheel rider at my dealer recommended i try to find a flywheel weight for the R. well no one had them but Trail Tech was supposed to make new dirrect replacement ones soon.
Finally after waiting about 6 months they were finally able to send me a flywheel around the 8 or 9 ounce mark. i finally got it installed and have done some short runs around my neighborhood with it, and all i can say is that it is the best $120 i have spent on this bike. with my 13/39 gearing (wich is now to much) their was a very noticble difference as soon as i let the clutch out. it required les gas and slipping and took off with a noticble shove. goose the gas and she came up to verticle much easier and faster. i was able to let the RPM drop way down in third then ease in the gas and it pulled out where as i used to have to clutch it some. as far as i can tell their really dosen't seem to be a loss in how fast the bike revs either.
now that it's in the bike i will hopefully be doing some more riding this weekend and will be able to give some more info on how it reacted in the woods and on the hills. i have put my 14T back on front and will be doing some testing with that also. once i have my Hotcam stage 2 in i should be able to pull or run with my buddies HRC bike that always gets me after 3rd gear.
anyway if you have just purchased a new R or are going to be then i would definitly consider Trail Tech's flywheel as a must do modification if you will be riding in the woods. you will absolutly not be disapointed.

well i might have some bad news. went to run the bike a little today around the neighborhood. after getting it started, I ran it up the street, i stoped at the stop sign. when i went to take off it did a i'm cold and quitting thing. when i went to fire it back up wouldn't fire. seems it has no spark. i'm headding to a buddies house later and we will have to see if we can fix the problem or if the flywheel has to go back. i'll keep in touch.

we are going to be looking in to it in depth tomarrow, i think? i hope it is just a fouled plug or something stupid i'm not seeing. it will suck if it is the flywheel because i don't have the puller anymore, had to send it back to TT, since they were nice and let me barrow it.
i'll keep you all updated as soon as i find out.

All,
We have verified two bad flywheels from one bike. We also have several other TRX450's that have had flywheels for months with no problems (including one of own).
We have made a design change to correct the problem. If you have a our flywheel, send it back for a new flywheel. If you do not have a puller, contact us and we will give you one for free.

some more info, we finally got to look into it some more. (posted in another thread also)
here is what my +9 is doing.
everyting installed properly and rechecked today. if you go to the bike and it is completely cold it will fire and run very good. it shows no loss of power or electrical power either. get the gike warm and shut it off. go to restart it and there is no spark. none! let it go completly cold, like the next morning, and it starts and runs. then same thing all over.
now i know that i need to get in touch with trail tech and i have and will be again on monday. but can you guys maybe pin point what would be different.
also how do you know if the magnets spun? and if they did it shouldn't start the next day either should it?

Somebody was telling me that there magnets might not be to good, when the bike gets hot, or the oil gets hot etc, the magnet loses strength.

The first run of flywheels that TrailTech made had a problem with the magnets on a few of them. TrailTech has really stepped up to the plate and they will replace the flywheel for anyone that has one of the first ones, whether they are having a problem or not.

ok we seem to have the problem fixed.
i finally had a chance to get it out and run it some. i also put my 14T back on and a HC stage 2. now that thing is definitly faster but that has nothing to do with the flywheel.
from what i have noticed and felt so far the thing really helps down low. lots of extra push. now if you are drag raceing or just running a really long straight you will feel a loss in acceleration. especially in 4th and 5th gear. now i didn't like the way that felt, but i didn't buy it for racing on the road.
i'm going to spend some time in the woods with it soon and i hopefully will be able to give a good discription of those conditions later.

well finally got in the woods with the bike. set-up as follows.
14/39 gearing
Hot Cam stage 2
+9 ounce flywheel
let's just say i'm not going to change a thing. it is awsome! great low end with flywheel, then the cam and taller gearing helps rip in the open sections. i will be adding a rekluse very soon. can't wait to see how that all plays out. probably some 22's also.

DN1911,
In another review showing step by step installation procedures there was a picture of the instructions. On there it stated you needed to modify a bracket for the +8 flywheel. Did you need to do that, and what all did you need to do to modify it? Was it difficult, and did you have any problems with the install?
Thanks,
Dave

we did have to modify the bracket that is shown in the instructions. once you locate it, remove the two 8mm bolts. then you want to enlarge the holes (use 1/4 drill bit)so that when you put it back in it sits flush with the cover. the instructions have a good picture on them. my mechanic friend, being the way he his, took a dremel to the out side edge that faces the flywheel and removed some metel.
what you are doing is clearencing the braket for the flywheel. once you think it will fit, take a paint pen and mark the flywheel. put the cover back on and put in 2 bolts or so to hold it there. then with the ignition off kick it over slowly a couple of times. remove the cover and check to see if the paint has been rubbed off. if it has then keep modifing the braket until it clears the flywheel.
it was an easy install. just take your time and double check everything. also the puller should come with 3 peices, make sure you put the cover on the crank so that it dosen't get torn up, when you crank the puller down. gook luck, you will love the results.
