Full Version: What's the best 4x4 ATV?
Honda TRX450R Forums: Honda TRX 450R Forum > Other Quads > All other quads

I want to buy a 4x4 / 2x4 ATV. I have owned Honda's all my life. What about Polaris and Kawasaki or Yamaha? I want something that will hold up. Not break down the first day. I'm looking for 500cc nothing more or less. Just a 4x4 that can be switched from 2 to 4 wheel drive. No GPS but independent suspension a must. Any help would be great.
Thanks
Brian

have you thought about an can am (brp)outlander 400, or 500efi that will be out this winter for 07. all of the outlanders have independent and most power for their class and all come with a factory 3 year warranty. Or you could spring for the 5 yr extended warranty. push button 4x4 with the visco locker in the front.
quadking450r
the suzuki's are the best so far.

Thanks for the replies. I looked at the Kawasaki 660 Brute force today. There frames look cheaply made. Lots of sloppy welds. I also looked at the Sportsman’s 500 EFI. I like it a lot but it's a Polaris. I don't know much about them. They come with lots of extras. And I stopped by the Honda dealer. Seen the Foreman 500 and the Rubicon. Don't know. Over priced a little for me. Also they don’t have independent suspension and EFI, which I like a lot. So next stop will be CAM AM. Then Suzuki on Friday.

the push button 4x4 with the visco locker in the front on the can am is very nice if i had the need and cash for a 4x4 it would be can am

Don't go w/ polaris or kawasaki, they are the two worst brands of Utility atvs. We have a honda rubicon and a honda rincon and our tenant has a Polaris Sportsman 500, has broken down 5x more than our honda. I think the yamaha's are decent, don't know about bombardier. I can tell you though you can't go wrong with the honda rincon!!! It is a 680cc, and the rubicon is 500, but the rubicon doesn't have independent rear suspension, and you can tell the difference.

If you want a workhorse dont overloof the arctic cat , it has a killer chassis, in a 400, 500, and new 700 its like the same chassis and massive clearance....IRS..diffrential lock 2/4wd...600lbs

For a speedy agile Utility? I think the 700 efi KingQuad is pretty nimble... and fast, haven raced one yet..

Now used, thats a different story, Im a modder and I would like to have an older prairie 700 twin.. you can punch em to 900, and they SCREAM...ive ridden and raced agaisnt them in drags and they are nice... and i would like the straight rear axle for sliding...

yeah i hear alot of bad about the brute force chassis...

Im turned off to the size of the outlander looks heavier...

Honda, Zuk AC and a few other draw the line at 600 lbs or around there.... i just couldnt own anything heavier and bigger.... so I dont want a CanAm 800 or whatever, even though they look fast...

maybe the renegade?..looks \bada$$ and lighter...

But It seems a waste not to get at least 650 or 700.....JMO

I forgot about the arctic cat, it is also a very nice brand of 4x4 biggrin.gif

I have a Prairie 700 and I love it. But if I was buying one right now I'd get the Grizzly 700.

Buy a Rincon 680. Can't beat Honda reliability!!
PITTMANSPOWERSPORTS
i got to ride one of the new 680 rincon from honda, amazing, and this is coming from someone who has riden polaris, suzuki and stuff, not only do you get the reliability of a honda, but this quad does freaken reverse wheelies in four wheel drive! talk about a rush!
brianza3
Well I bought an 06' Foreman 4x4 S. I love it so far. Thanks for the help
I bought it for 5795.00 out the door with a 1 year and 4 month warrenty for free and a street legal horn.

the new 500 outty runs very well, its will catch the sportsman 700 in 700-800 ft and pass it. same goes for it with the arctic cat 650 and the grizz 660. in my opinion the lil 500 is the ultimate trail quad. you can stil run OVER 60 still plenty of power down low especially for a 500. in the new can am video they lined the 500 outty and the 680 honda up for a 300 ft drag and the outty won by a bike over the honda. i know you all are skeptical about those ads, but if you listen they say all the results were looked over by and independent judge those judges are reps. from honda, polaris, yamaha, suzuki etc. . those videos are as legitament as they get. the new 500 weighs in right about 600lbs . the 650 and 800's in the xt models run right at 700.

outlander or honda

well i would love to have a honda rincon def. a great offroad beast. my next choice would be a polaris 800, there great bikes, i have a 450 well my dad and he loves it. but he just uses it for some small towing the jetski and house work, someplay and off roading. the 800 would be great plus it comes with a winch. my favorite.

I sold my 450r and bought a 800 outty. The thing is sick. The Rotax 800 makes good power. Stock 45hp and 36 ft pounds on dyno. with slip-on and dobach efi their at 50 and 39 .quad weighs under 700. It wheelies on throttle, top speed is 77 mph. It has IRS rear suspension. But it power slides like a stright axle.
We do alot of winter, mud, snow riding that the r couldn't do.

We were racing 2 weeks ago, hard pack 0-70. its as fast as a stock 2004 trx 450r. Nose to nose the whole way. Another buddy has a 400z that has cams, full Yosh, etc. He has me by 2 quads. Thats bone stock outty 800
Its is a quailty built piece. I would buy another cam-am.

Honda ute quads are about 4 or 5 years behind everyone else. Only one of them has IRS. They are just starting to get disk brakes, most of them still have drum brakes in the back. They are the only company without a front locker. They are slow and underpowered.
The biggest baddest ute quad out is the Bomb 800. I think it's the most expensive though.

were you in 4x4 racing? most people think it will slow you but thats not the case. if you launch in 4x4 just punching the throttle and sit at the very front of the seat you will get your best launch.

I like the CanAm 800. Looks Sick! Suppose to be fast!

Ok if you don't know anything about the Utility quads please do not give out false information.

Honda Utility quads are a bit behind, BUT most of it is for a reason. First of all, they do have front lockers... They had them for a couple years now. The reason they don't have IRS on any of the other quads, like the Rubicon is because the Rubicon was made to be a work horse, an IRS quad cant tow nearly as much as an SRA can because the IRS will sag down so badly.

Slow and underpowered? They don't have as much power as an Outty 800 but the Honda Rincon has more than enough power for any task you throw at it, along with the Rubicon.

Now, if you are in the market for a Big Bore Utility quad, here are the main ones you will be looking at:

Honda Rincon 680
Yamaha Grizzly 700
Suzuki Kingquad 700
Can-Am Outlander 800
Polaris SP800
Kawasaki BruteForce 750
Kawasaki Prairie 700

If you are looking for a work-horse machine, the best one isn't a big bore but it has plenty of power, the Honda Rubicon 500.

If you are looking for a mud machine your best bet would be the Polaris SP800.

If you are looking for a crazy fast machine that will be pretty good at everything else, the Outlander 800 is nice, but it costs way to much in my opinion.

If you are looking for a great handling, trail utility, the best one is the Honda Rincon 680, smokes all of the ute's in the trails.

If you are looking for a quad thats good all around (mudding, trail riding, rock crawling, etc...) the best one is the KingQuad 700 and the Grizzly 700.

The Kawasaki's are nice quads. The bruteforce is fast as hell but not as fast as the CanAm 800, its probably the second fastest ute. And the Prarie is an awesome quad because you can get it in SRA and it handles very well, but from my experience the Rincon handles better.

So yeah, if you want more info, shoot me a pm, ill be glad to help out.

If I were looking to a 4x4 I would seriously consider the Renegade. 800cc's of 4wd "sport" machine...Iv seen a few of them and theyre actually quite fast and a few guys are even ballsy enough to jump them.

Honestly though, My favorite is the old trx350 foreman...those things are just tanks. I see them going cheap nowadays. They are deathly slow (honda z50 slow) and the suspension sucks, but the things just have character. Of course this is coming from a guy that refused to accept quads until he retired the atc250r and bought a 450r a matter of a month ago....

i had a honda rancher with 27inch vampires before i got my r and you couldnt kill the thing trust me i tried i was sunk in above the handlebars so many times i cant count but drain the airbox pull the spark plug and turn it over a couple times and it was back on the road again

Buy the Artic Cat 500
Mero
I traded in my 06 TRX 450ER for the Can-Am Renegade 800 and I couldn't be happier with it. It's got the speed of sports quad and the power 4X4 of the utility quads. And it's really fun to ride, do wheelies and throw the back wheels around like I did with the Honda.
bbr
you made a wise decision....i have 2800miles on my ol650 and no complaints. i love it. wouldnt get rid of it for anything else. the guys i trail ride and race with that ride sport bikes either are shocked and awed or just straight up cuss it! they dont like getting outrun by a ute!
crzyatv
artic cats are slow, but have AMAZING towing capacaties... my dads 500 artic cat can tow more than my one friends dads 650 LOL
szynkowski_racing
HONDA RANCHER 420 ES 4X4..... price is great, they now come independant rear suspension, lots of power for only 420cc and its smaller so it handles trails better than the bigger quads !!!

thats just my 2 cents...
bbr
over 4,000 miles on my outty with no major failures! just replaced a couple u joints!
