I just purchased a used 2006 TRX450ER. The day that i bought it, no problems, ran great. Next day, i changed all the fluids, since i didn't know how often the previous owner did. Since then, it seems my starter had a harder time engaging. Now it just spins. I can push it off, no problem, cranks right up. I took the starter off and looked it over and it bench tested just fine. Could me changing the oils have anything to do with it?
Any ideas? This is my first time on this site, i've already found a lot of useful information. Thanks for any help! |

i dont see changing oils causing an issue either.
might want to check at your local honda if the starter had the recall done. 06 bike will definately quality if they are still honoring the recall?

I'm pretty sure the recall has expired for the 06 models by now.
maybe unless this bike was sold as a left over model not too long ago.... them maybe it can still be fixed for free.

Yes, it expired in August of last year. It was NOT a recall. It was a product update campaign. Basically Honda recognizing that their starting systems were junk and replaced a bunch of them for free if your VIN number fell within the range. I also missed the campaign and they will not fix it for me. My motor was torn down during the campaign is why I missed out on it. Luckily, my starter clutch is still doing alright. All of their starter kits were sent back to cooperate. They only way to get your product update now was if you were in the military and deployed during part of the update. (which requires a copy of military orders)

so i called my honda dealer, he knew of the problem, had the part i needed, "reduction gear". I gave him my vin, but said that i couldn't be able to get the free recall. Well long story short, i've replaced the reduction gear and still doesn't work. Guess i gotta make an apointment. Thanks for the help guys.

Yes, you need the one way bearing. That is usually the reason for slipping.
Also, never ever give it gas while starting. That is usually a sure fire way to take out that one way clutch/bearing. Not saying you do, just a warning for someone who may not know.
