I need some help here guys!
New 450 with about 10 hours runtime.
Installed usual hi-po add-ons and a new cam.
First cam was HC stage 1, checked clearances several times and lash was spot on, but there is a ticking noise coming from the top end right side, sounds exactly like excessive valve clearance, check valves again, Perfect. noise goes away as throttle is increased, quad runs great. order more hi-po parts including HC stage 2 , remove stage 1 cam and inspect, everything looks great. install stage 2 cam check clearances several times add proper shims, proper break-in at 2500 rpm, everything sounds great, reduce engine to idle and ticking noise once again on right side top end. hmmmmm . Do I possibly have a problem with the decompressor at low rpm? Can I start it without the Decompressor to test my theory. I'm no youngster and have been building drag race motors for nearly 20 years, im not going to let somthing this simple kick my butt. By the way, is the decompressor lash (.006")measured at the roller or the rocker arm?
Thanks

If your measuring the valves at the wrong spot they could be out of spec's which would cause a small ticking noise.

Or it could just be the motor... These motors are pretty noisy/klanky to begin with. Even stock mine was pretty noisy, and so was my CRF.

Novanuttz, I'm no expert! But, the hotcam is know to make excessive noise! Every hotcam that I have ever heard makes the noise your talking about including mine!! Hotcam noise sounding like the valves are ticking is normal. Just my 2 cents worth!!

mine makes noise too. it did when it was stock and has continued after each mod that i have added. i think the motor just is noisey due the light weight materials used for manufacturing a light weight motor. if the materials were heavier/thicker, you probably wouldn't hear a thing. i'm guessing since i have read many similar posts here and elsewhere, that it is nothing more than normal engine noise. and... i HOPE it is too. ^_^

I have the HRC cam and I have picked up some noise also.

I agree with some of you that it is probably the decompressor. I don't believe that the shims would wear enough in the short time to allow enough clearance to cause valve noise.

You could remove the decomp. and put the motor back together to check but...???

Good luck trying to start the thing without the decomp. I weigh 195 and don't think that I have enough a$$ to do it, not to mention the wear on other parts such as kick starter etc.

If you guys think it is too loud come ride my 1986 XR 80. HOLY $HIT!!! I haven't rode it at all this summer since I got my R and now that I have my daughter old enought to get rides I can't believe the motor noise. Not to mention the notchy tranny. I just about ripped into the motor the other day!

its the tranny but the motor isnt that loud. i rode a yfz and it makes crazy sounds. the 450r does too and its just because they both have thin side cases so its lighter and you can hear threw them better

I've learned to just ingore engine noises. I know that may be bad, but it will drive you crazy always *thinking* you hear something that wasn't there before. Besides, compare to cannondales these things are quiet, those things sound like they have loose metal knocking around in them...

The valve clearances are so large that the valves are going to make some noise. If you had a rod bearing on its way out it would keep getting louder.

That is the same spot mine started ticking from. I just got word that my 450 needs a new camshaft and rocker arm.

Hmm.... Mine's pretty well silent (HRC cam and other goodies). No valve noise what so ever.

Makes my 400EX sound like a rattling POS...

Don't have any advice other than make sure you are setting the clearance correctly on the valves >>and<< decompressor assembly
