What do need to check out...see below pic
Engine is/was a 480cc 11.5:1 w/ +3mm crank and a hc3 cam Now the weird...it's only this bad on the exhaust side of cylinder and and the piston shows no wear to the eye. Glad I was bored waiting for parts and decided to tear into it.

To me the only thing i seem so far is that the compression ring gap is HUGE!!

Is that grooves in the cylinder? Hard to tell from pic.. piston rock from incorrect piston to cylinder wall clearance would be my guess... and it is a guess... Did it knock when running?
The ring gap would say that might be the case too though..

What does the other ring gap look like? If it was piston rock the skirts of the piston should be beat in pretty good.

That is caused by lack of air filter mantiance. Dirt went through the motor. If the cylinder is that bad so is the piston. Probley check the valves as well. The dirt hits the valves before it hits the cylinder.

Only thing that causes that is dirt. sometimes poor plating on the cylinder. On LTR450 stock cylinders you see this alot. And by the color of that oil on your head in the background ( looks dirty) I would say it was eating some dirt. when you put it back together make sure you clean your intake boot real good. It aslo would hurt to tear the bottom end down just to clean & inspect everything |
