Default Engine Oil and White Smoke

Can to much engine oil cause white smoke to come from the exhaust.

The reason I ask, obviously I have or had some. Started it up last Saturday, had some smoke when I popped the throttle. Read on here could be coolant, head gasket, ect. Talked to a buddy of mine, he said it sounds more like valve guides.

I let it sit all week and changed engine and tranny oil tonight for the first time since I bought it (only 1 two hour race ride time in that period). The previous owner had so much oil in it, you couldn't see a "line" in the sight glass. Filled it up to H, let it run for 3-4 minutes, let it settle, then put a little more oil in it, let it run, let it sit. Now after letting cool all the way down, the "line" is almost to the H, so about right.

After filling everything, I let it warm up, popped the throttle, basically did everything that I did last weekend to get the smoke. But tonight, I didn't get any after that time.

Like I asked earlier, just wondering if all the oil that was in it would cause the white smoke.

Im sure it could. Maybe pushing through the rings into the combustion chamber. Not even mentioning it could blow gaskets..

sometimes when they are cold and you have the choke on they smoke a very little bit. is that what happened the first time? I dont think having too much oil would cause it to do that. Usually the extra oil ends up coming out the vent tube anyway

No choke on. I did have a bit of dusty oil on the back of the engine after the race, but not anything crazy. The smoke last weekend was a week after the race, and it sat in the garage that entire week without being started, just like between tonight and last weekend.

I did drain the engine oil separately, so I'll see if I get any separation with oil and coolant, but from the looks of it right now, it doesn't seem like I'll see anything besides straight oil.

It was only doing it when I popped the throttle. If I let it sit and idle, nothing. After I shut it off, it seeped out the end, kind of like a vehicle would during an extremely cold day after you shut it off. Maybe it's nothing and I should ride it like I would normally.

Choke=more gas.. Gas smoke is usually black. Oil and antifreeze smoke is usually white

Obviously, I don't start or ride this a lot right now, which is why I'm just now replying to this. I went down to start it and let it warm up for a little while (first time started in 3 weeks, just sits in my basement), and noticed that maybe the smoke wasn't white to begin with afterall. When I started it outside it did look white, but sitting in my basement, at least with the way the lighting was, it almost has a blue tint. I've read that this could be piston rings, among other things.

It has a 13.5:1 JE Piston in it.

1. Could a guy re-ring that piston without taking the piston all the way out?
2. Should I just get a new piston and gaskets, since originally if it was white, it may have been leaking coolant (which I don't think it was since there was no coolant in the oil). I figured this would eliminate some problems that it may be.
3. How much would it hurt it if I rode it on the trails? No hard riding or racing, just nice leisurly trail riding.

I'd like to make it until the winter before I did much of anything to it.
