Default F&$k sakes!!!!

I have no idea what's up with my bike now. I was riding it last week and it was running fine. I had just changed my needle to the HRC one to go along with it's 185 main.
Anyway, I went to start it up yesterday, choke was on full, kicked it twice, and it started. It seemed like it was idling higher than normal so, I went to give it a bit of gas, and it died. I kicked it over again, it started, hit the gas quickly again, and it died again. So, I checked that there was gas in the tank (which there was but it was very low) so I thought that maybe the engine wasn't able to suck enough gas. I filled it up today, tired to start it, and I couldn't get it started no matter how many times I kicked it, choke on or off didn't make a difference. It didn't even sound like it wanted to start.
The bike is new to me, I'm still learning all of the mechanical basics of the bike, so I have no idea what the issue is.

Its getting colder which will make harder starts. Engine will flood easily as well.

May need a carb clean. Only takes a little bad gas to clog a carb, especially if there's any ethanol in it.

contact the previous owner and ask.....it never hurts. There are way too many issues which could cause this problem. We need to know when all this started.. you say the bike is new to you..but HOW NEW? have you ridden/started this bike before the HRC upgrade? if so, was it fine then? or did you just get this bike and have not ridden it at all?

I got it started this morning. I did have the gas on, that was the first thing I checked! :) I tunred the gas on, waited a couple of minutes, full choke, and it started on the second kick. I let it warm up for a few minutes and then turned the choke off. Then I shut it down and waited for it to cool down some. Then, did the same thing all over again and it started with no issue. It seems to be idling fine but it started to idle a little higher than normal, and then it would die back down to a regular idle, then pick back up again.......

I put in a half a can of sea foam and will run that through the tank. I'll clean the carb out over the winter

The bike is an '05 and I picked it up this July. I got it going this morning and it seems fine.

The symptoms of high idle then slowing down is typical for a LEAN PILOT CONDITION... info only

Thanks for the reply! As soon as the weather gets better I'm going to double check what the pilot jet size is. I bought the bike used and it had dyno jet main in it (can't recall the size). I have since replaced it with the HRC jet kit for the '05 but I don't remember what the pilot jet was

When it didnt start did you pull the plug and see if it was wet or gas fouled???
You may have not put the carb together right maybe,,,I have done a main jet change out myself and it ran great for the day...But next day it would not start,,,found out the main jet had backed out and was sitting in the bottom of the bowl...

Woot to me,,,8yrs and hit over 200 post...

haha congrat's on hitting over 200 posts! I never did check the plug because it was a new plug that I had in it. I put it in the week before and this would've been the first time riding it with the new plug.
I had the bike out again today and it started fine. I'm thinking it must've been the low amount of fuel that was in the tank (probably lower than what I thought it was) I'm still going to pull the carb off as soon as the weather warms up.....it's too chilly out now to do anything outside
